CBSE Schools in West Asia: A Look at Their Reach and Operations

The ongoing unrest and military activity across parts of the Middle East have begun to disrupt daily life in several areas. Public gatherings have been curtailed in many locations due to security concerns, and educational institutions have also been temporarily closed. These developments have directly impacted the Indian community residing there, particularly the education of their children.

What many may not realize is that a substantial network of schools affiliated with India’s Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) operates throughout the Gulf region. These institutions serve a large number of Indian students whose academic routines are now being affected by the prevailing situation.

The Presence of CBSE Schools in Gulf Nations

According to data released by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in 2023, there are 217 schools in key Middle Eastern countries that are formally affiliated with CBSE. All of these institutions follow the curriculum and examination structure prescribed by the board.

The distribution of these schools by country is as follows:

  • United Arab Emirates – 106 schools
  • Saudi Arabia – 37 schools
  • Kuwait – 26 schools
  • Oman – 21 schools
  • Qatar – 19 schools
  • Bahrain – 8 schools

Thousands of students are enrolled in these schools, the majority of which are managed by members of the Indian diaspora.

How Education Is Delivered in These Schools

The teaching methodology in these Gulf-based institutions closely mirrors that of schools in India. Classrooms rely on NCERT textbooks, and assessments are conducted in line with CBSE guidelines. This ensures that students receive an education that is consistent with what they would experience back home.

Many of these schools are well-equipped with modern facilities. Smart classrooms, well-stocked libraries, science laboratories, and sports grounds are commonly available. To promote holistic development, cultural events and athletic competitions are also organized on a regular basis.

Impact on Scheduled Examinations

In light of the current circumstances, CBSE has decided to postpone exams that were scheduled for March 2, 5, and 6, 2026, in several countries. This precautionary measure applies to Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. A decision regarding the exam planned for March 7 will be made based on how the situation evolves.

The board has clarified that this is a preventive step rather than a cancellation. The affected examinations have not been scrapped; instead, revised dates will be announced at a later time.
