Mizoram Pushes for Constitutional Recognition of Mizo Language

The Mizoram government is actively pursuing the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, a move that would grant it official recognition at the national level. Chief Minister Lalduhoma recently chaired a meeting with members of the Mizo Language Development Board’s (MLDB) study group to assess progress on this long-pending demand.

According to the state’s Information and Public Relations Department, the meeting focused on reviewing the initiatives undertaken by the study group and evaluating the roadmap for formalizing the proposal. The study group informed the Chief Minister that its report is nearly complete and ready to be submitted to the government for further action.

Widespread Support Across Communities

The study group has been actively engaging with representatives from various organizations and ethnic communities across Mizoram to gather opinions on the matter. Members reported that there is overwhelming consensus and backing for including Mizo in the Eighth Schedule, reflecting the collective aspiration of the state’s population.

During the discussions, it was also highlighted that Mizoram had previously submitted a formal proposal to the central government requesting this recognition, but the matter did not progress. The study group recommended that the state government resubmit a more comprehensive proposal and establish a dedicated task force to pursue the case with renewed vigor at the central level.

Linguistic Significance and Historical Context

Mizo was declared the official language of Mizoram in 1974. Beyond its official status within the state, the language serves as a vital link language for the Zo ethnic communities dispersed across different parts of the world. It functions as a common medium of communication, connecting people who share cultural and linguistic roots but reside in various countries.

The language’s literary standing has already been acknowledged by the Sahitya Akademi, which recognizes Mizo as a regional language. This recognition allows for advanced academic study, with scholars able to pursue doctoral research in the language up to the PhD level.

Chief Minister Commends Progress

Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed appreciation for the significant progress achieved by the MLDB and the study group within a relatively short timeframe. He praised their dedicated efforts and assured them that the recommendations and proposals put forward would be given due consideration and implemented appropriately.

The Chief Minister’s positive response signals the government’s commitment to advancing the cause of the Mizo language at the national level. His assurance that the study group’s suggestions would be acted upon underscores the administration’s seriousness in pursuing this constitutional recognition.

Demographic Spread and Growing Speaker Base

Data from the 2011 Census reveals that Mizo language speakers are spread across 26 states and 7 union territories in India. Officials believe that members of the Mizo ethnic group are now present in virtually all states of the country, indicating the language’s reach far beyond the boundaries of Mizoram itself.

The census recorded over 8.3 lakh Mizo speakers within Mizoram alone. However, officials note that this number is expected to have grown considerably since then. Some scholars estimate that the global population of Mizo speakers has now surpassed 22 lakh, reflecting the language’s continued vitality and expansion.

Digital Presence and Global Recognition

In a significant step toward technological inclusion, Google added Mizo to its Google Translate service in May 2022. This move has made the language more accessible to a global audience and facilitated communication for Mizo speakers in the digital space.

The People’s Linguistic Survey of India classifies Mizo as a developing language, while UNESCO has placed it in the “vulnerable” category among the world’s languages. These classifications highlight both the language’s active usage and the need for continued preservation efforts.

The push to include Mizo in the Eighth Schedule represents more than a symbolic gesture. It would grant the language official recognition in the Indian Constitution, alongside 22 other scheduled languages, and open up new avenues for its promotion, preservation, and development. For the Mizo people, this recognition would validate their linguistic heritage and ensure its protection for future generations.

As the study group finalizes its report and the state government prepares to take the matter forward, the people of Mizoram remain hopeful that their language will soon receive the constitutional status it deserves. The collective efforts of the government, linguistic experts, and community representatives reflect a shared determination to secure this recognition and celebrate the rich linguistic diversity of the region.
