Researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Rourkela have secured a patent for an advanced automated system designed to identify unauthorized individuals in restricted zones by analyzing their walking patterns. This cutting-edge technology promises to transform how large and complex buildings are monitored and secured.

The newly patented system leverages a combination of thermal imaging and gait recognition technology to address one of the most persistent challenges in modern security infrastructure. By moving away from traditional surveillance methods, this innovation represents a significant leap forward in how facilities can protect sensitive areas.

Overcoming the Limitations of Conventional Surveillance

Professor Samit Ari from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, who led the research initiative, highlighted the inherent flaws in existing security setups. Traditional CCTV-based monitoring systems depend heavily on continuous human oversight and manual video analysis. This reliance on human intervention often renders these systems inefficient and vulnerable to errors, especially when monitoring numerous camera feeds simultaneously.

Tracking individuals across multiple cameras in expansive facilities presents considerable difficulties, particularly when dealing with fluctuating lighting conditions and physical obstructions. These environmental factors can severely compromise the accuracy of conventional systems, creating potential security gaps that could be exploited.

How the Advanced Detection System Works

To overcome these obstacles, the research team developed a fully autonomous, non-intrusive solution that harnesses the power of thermal imaging technology. This sophisticated approach enables the system to detect, identify, and track individuals with remarkable precision, even in challenging visual environments.

The system employs human gait as a unique biometric identifier—much like a fingerprint or retinal scan. Every person has a distinctive way of walking, and the system capitalizes on this uniqueness to distinguish between authorized personnel and potential threats. This biometric approach dramatically reduces the need for manual monitoring while increasing overall security effectiveness.

When an individual enters a restricted area, the system immediately captures their walking pattern and compares it against a database of authorized personnel’s gait signatures. If the system detects a mismatch, it flags the individual as suspicious and instantly alerts security personnel to investigate the potential breach.

Technical Implementation and Prototype Development

The research team has already constructed a working prototype to demonstrate the system’s capabilities. This functional model consists of three thermal cameras connected to a central server through a USB interface. The setup successfully validates the concept and showcases how the technology can be deployed in real-world scenarios.

One of the key advantages of thermal imaging technology is its ability to distinguish human subjects from the background with minimal infrared noise.
