PM Inaugurates IIM Guwahati Campus and National Data Centre in Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday officially inaugurated the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati along with a state-of-the-art data centre, marking a significant step forward for higher education and digital infrastructure in Northeast India. The virtual ceremony saw the launch of the temporary campus, which is expected to give a strong push to management education and advanced learning opportunities across the region.
Second IIM in the Northeast
The central government approved the establishment of this IIM in Guwahati last year. It now stands as the second IIM in the Northeast, following the one in Shillong, and the 22nd such institution in the country. The new campus is poised to cater to the growing demand for quality management education in the region, opening doors for students who previously had to travel far for such programmes.
National Data Centre for the Northeast
During the same event, the Prime Minister virtually inaugurated the National Data Centre (NDC) located in Amingaon, Kamrup district, from Lachit Ghat. This facility has an approved capacity of 8.5 megawatts, with an average power allocation of 10 kilowatts per rack. The centre will host critical applications from various government departments and also serve as a disaster recovery hub for other NDCs, ensuring data security and operational continuity.
This infrastructure is expected to strengthen the digital backbone of the Northeast, enabling smoother governance and faster delivery of public services. It aligns with the broader national push towards data localisation and resilient digital ecosystems.
Electric Bus Fleet Flagged Off
In addition to the educational and digital initiatives, PM Modi also flagged off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme. These buses are set to improve urban mobility in multiple cities:
- 100 buses for Guwahati
- 50 buses each for Nagpur and Bhavnagar
- 25 buses for Chandigarh
The introduction of these electric buses underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions and reducing carbon emissions in urban areas.
The dual inauguration of the IIM campus and the data centre reflects a coordinated approach towards holistic regional development. While the IIM will nurture future business leaders and entrepreneurs, the data centre will support the digital transformation of government services. Together, they are set to create new opportunities for students, professionals, and businesses in the Northeast, bringing the region closer to the mainstream of national growth.
