National Youth Day 2026: Students Across India to Join ‘Run for Swadeshi’
On January 12, educational institutions throughout India will host the ‘Run for Swadeshi’ event, marking the 164th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Organized under the banner of National Youth Day, this nationwide initiative aims to inspire young minds with the ideals of self-reliance, physical fitness, discipline, and national unity.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already communicated with all state governments and universities, directing them to facilitate this large-scale event. The run will feature distances of two, three, and five kilometers, allowing participants to choose their preferred challenge. Each participant will receive a certificate acknowledging their involvement.
Who Can Participate?
The event is open to a wide range of participants, including:
- College and university students
- Members of NSS and NCC units
- Youth club members
- Faculty and staff members
- General public and local community members
Program Highlights
Before the run commences, organizers will deliver motivational speeches centered on Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and the importance of self-reliance. These addresses are designed to reinforce the core values of the event and provide participants with meaningful context for their participation.
Prof. Manish Joshi, Secretary of UGC, has issued formal letters to states and higher education institutions, emphasizing the significance of this program. The initiative reflects a broader push to engage the country’s youth in activities that promote both personal development and collective national consciousness.
Higher education institutions are required to submit detailed reports about their respective events to the UGC following the conclusion of the run. This data collection will help assess the reach and impact of the program across different regions.
The ‘Run for Swadeshi’ represents more than a physical activity; it serves as a platform to reconnect young Indians with indigenous values and the vision of a self-sufficient nation. By participating, students and community members alike contribute to a movement that celebrates cultural pride while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.
This coordinated effort across educational campuses underscores the commitment to fostering a generation that values both physical well-being and patriotic spirit. The event promises to be a vibrant display of youthful energy directed toward constructive national goals.
