Uttar Pradesh Set to Introduce Tamil Classes in Varanasi Schools and Colleges
In a significant move to strengthen cultural and linguistic ties between northern and southern India, the Uttar Pradesh government is planning to launch regular Tamil language classes in schools and colleges across Varanasi. The inspiration for this move traces back to a recent national radio address in which the Prime Minister highlighted the remarkable achievement of Payal Patel, a student at Government Queens College who successfully learned Tamil in a remarkably short span of time. Her story has sparked interest and motivated educational authorities to replicate this success on a larger scale.
Following this momentum, Government Queens College has taken the lead by planning to introduce daily evening Tamil classes. The college’s principal, Sumit Kumar, confirmed that the District Inspector of Schools has already issued directives to begin the program. Kumar emphasized that the decision reflects the Prime Minister’s commitment to cultural integration through language education.
Plans to Send Teachers to Tamil Nadu
As part of the broader exchange program, officials are also considering a unique reciprocal arrangement. Approximately 50 teachers from Varanasi may be sent to Tamil Nadu to teach Hindi, creating a two-way linguistic and cultural exchange. This proposal has been discussed in meetings chaired by the Varanasi Commissioner and District Magistrate, signaling strong administrative support for the initiative.
Principal Kumar shared insights into the collaborative efforts underway, noting that discussions have taken place with Sandhya Kumar Sai from Tamil Nadu, who previously taught Tamil to the student mentioned by the Prime Minister. She has reportedly agreed to conduct online classes to facilitate learning. Additionally, the head of the Tamil department at Banaras Hindu University has assured full cooperation in this academic endeavor.
Strengthening the Historic Kashi-Tamil Connection
The bond between Kashi (Varanasi) and Tamil Nadu is deeply rooted in centuries of shared civilizational, cultural, and educational heritage. Recent cultural programs have further reinforced this connection. Priyanka Tiwari, principal of Harish Chandra Girls Inter College, recounted how her institution hosted a 15-day Tamil language program during the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, with 50 girl students actively participating. The students later showcased their learning through poetry recitations and song performances, displaying remarkable enthusiasm for the language.
Formal Curriculum on the Horizon
Given the overwhelming response and genuine interest shown by students, educational institutions are now considering more structured approaches. Harish Chandra Girls Inter College is exploring the possibility of introducing a formal Tamil curriculum starting from the next academic session. This would transform what began as an introductory program into a more comprehensive learning experience.
