Five Smartphone Safety Features That Could Save Your Life in an Emergency

Recent data from Delhi paints a stark picture of personal safety concerns. In the first 15 days of January 2026 alone, over 800 people were reported missing in the capital, with women and girls accounting for 509 of those cases. These numbers are a sobering reminder that staying safe isn’t just about being alert in public spaces—it’s also about using the technology already in your pocket. Your smartphone is far more than a device for calls and social media; when configured correctly, it becomes a powerful lifeline in moments of crisis. Below are five critical safety features you should activate today.

1. Emergency SOS: Your Instant Alert System

The Emergency SOS function is the single most important safety feature on any phone. It allows you to send an immediate distress signal with just a few button presses. By pre-selecting emergency contacts in your phone’s settings, you ensure that help is notified the moment you trigger the feature.

On iPhone

Press and hold the side button along with one of the volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Alternatively, rapidly press the side button five times. This action automatically calls local emergency services and sends your current location to your designated emergency contacts.

On Android

Navigate to your phone’s settings and search for “Safety & Emergency.” Enable the Emergency SOS option. Once set, pressing the power button three or five times in quick succession will send a message with your location to your chosen contacts. Some devices also offer the option to record a short audio clip or video during the alert.

2. Live Location Sharing: Keep Loved Ones Informed

Instead of sending a static map pin, live location sharing provides real-time updates on your movement. This is invaluable when you are in a rideshare, walking through an unfamiliar area, or traveling alone. iPhone users can share their location through the Find My app, while Android users can leverage Google Maps’ location sharing feature. Your family or friends can see exactly where you are, how fast you are moving, and your estimated time of arrival. This continuous stream of data offers peace of mind and a critical safety net.

3. The 112 India App: A Direct Line to Help

Developed by the Indian government, the 112 India app serves as a single point of contact for all emergency services. With one tap, you can alert the police, fire brigade, or an ambulance. The app automatically transmits your precise GPS coordinates to the nearest response center, eliminating the need to explain your location under stress. In situations where speaking is impossible or dangerous, this app allows you to summon help silently and effectively. It also includes a “Shake” feature that triggers an alert when you shake your phone vigorously.

4. Crash Detection and Personal Safety Check

Modern smartphones are equipped with sensors that can detect severe impacts, such as those from a car accident. The crash detection feature automatically contacts emergency services and your listed contacts if it registers a sudden, violent stop and you do not respond to its prompts. Additionally, Android devices offer a “Personal Safety” app with a “Safety Check” timer. You can set a timer for a specific duration—for example, the time it takes to walk home. If you do not confirm you are safe before the timer expires, the phone automatically shares your last known location with your emergency contacts and can even sound a loud alarm to attract attention.

5. Medical ID: Critical Information at a Glance

In a medical emergency, every second counts. Your Medical ID stores vital health information—such as blood type, allergies, existing conditions, and emergency contact numbers—directly on your phone’s lock screen. This means that first responders or Good Samaritans can access this data without needing your passcode. On iPhones, you can set this up in the Health app. On Android, look for “Medical Info” within the Safety & Emergency settings. This simple step can be the difference between receiving the correct treatment quickly and facing dangerous delays.

These five features are only effective if they are set up in advance. Take ten minutes today to configure them on your own phone and on the devices of family members who might need them most. Your proactive steps today could provide the protection you need tomorrow.
