India’s Next Digital Leap: What Reliance Jio’s AGM Revealed About 6G and Beyond

The landscape of mobile internet in India is poised for a dramatic transformation. Reliance Jio has signaled its readiness for the next major technological evolution. During its 49th Annual General Meeting, the company offered significant insights into its plans for 6G networks, artificial intelligence, and satellite-based internet services. Jio’s vision extends beyond merely delivering faster speeds; it aims to architect the entire digital ecosystem of the future.

The 6G Roadmap: A Glimpse Into the Future

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Jio Infocomm Limited, confirmed during the AGM that the company is actively developing 6G technology. While a precise launch date was not disclosed, the company has set an ambitious target to roll out commercial 6G services by 2030. This next-generation network is expected to do far more than accelerate internet speeds. It will serve as the backbone for AI-powered services, smart devices, and emerging digital technologies that will define the coming decade.

When Will Testing Begin?

According to the company’s statements, the foundational technical work for 6G is already underway. Pre-commercial testing and pilot trials could begin as early as 2028. Following these initial phases, Jio plans a phased expansion to ensure widespread 6G availability by 2030. This gradual approach is designed to build a robust and reliable network infrastructure.

Strengthening the 5G Foundation First

Before the 6G era begins, Jio is focused on consolidating its 5G presence. The company’s immediate goal is to connect the majority of its mobile users to the 5G network by 2030. This strategy is not just about current service delivery; it is about creating a solid technological base that will support the seamless transition to 6G in the years to follow.

Satellite Internet: Bridging the Connectivity Gap

One of the most notable announcements from the AGM involved Jio’s plans for satellite internet. The company is preparing to deploy a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. This network will work in tandem with traditional mobile towers to deliver high-speed internet to remote and underserved regions of the country. The goal is to eliminate connectivity dead zones and bring reliable online access to every corner of India.

Understanding LEO Satellites

Low Earth Orbit satellites operate at altitudes ranging from 160 to 2,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. Because they are positioned much closer to the planet than traditional geostationary satellites, they offer significantly faster data transmission and lower latency. This makes LEO technology a critical component of future high-speed internet networks.

How a Satellite Constellation Works

A single satellite cannot provide global coverage. Instead, companies like Jio are building satellite constellations—large groups of interconnected satellites working together. These satellites share data among themselves, covering vast areas and ensuring continuous internet connectivity for users on the ground. This approach is essential for delivering reliable service across diverse geographies.

The Symbiotic Relationship Between AI and 6G

Jio has emphasized that artificial intelligence will be deeply integrated with its 6G vision. The company believes that AI and 6G will complement each other, creating smarter, more efficient networks. Key applications include:

  • Smart Network Management: AI will automate traffic routing and resource allocation to optimize performance.
  • Enhanced Connectivity: Machine learning algorithms will predict and resolve network issues before they affect users.
  • Personalized Services: AI will enable tailored digital experiences based on individual usage patterns.

Jio’s Growing Network: By the Numbers

The company’s current scale underscores its readiness for these future technologies. Jio now serves over 524 million subscribers. During the fiscal year 2025-26, the network handled 241 exabytes of data traffic—a figure that highlights the rapidly increasing internet consumption across the country. This massive data usage provides the real-world insights and infrastructure experience needed to develop and deploy next-generation networks effectively.
