The Significance of Shattila Ekadashi in 2026

In the Hindu calendar, the eleventh lunar day of the waning moon in the month of Magha is dedicated to the sacred observance of Shattila Ekadashi. This particular Ekadashi holds profound spiritual importance, especially for those seeking to cleanse themselves of past misdeeds. The name itself, ‘Shattila’, meaning ‘six sesame seeds’, highlights the central role of sesame (til) in the rituals performed on this day.

Devotees believe that the use of sesame in six specific ways—donation, bathing, eating, applying as a paste, offering in a sacred fire (havan), and mixing with water—can absolve one of sins, even those accumulated over previous lifetimes. Furthermore, this practice is thought to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, bringing financial stability and positive shifts in one’s material well-being. Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is also worshipped with great devotion on this day.

When to Observe Shattila Ekadashi in 2026

According to the traditional Hindu calendar (Panchang), the Ekadashi tithi for the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of Magha month begins on January 13, 2026, at 3:17 PM. This sacred period concludes on January 14, 2026, at 5:52 PM. Consequently, the Shattila Ekadashi fast will be observed on Thursday, January 14, 2026.

Notably, this date also coincides with Makar Sankranti, another major festival celebrated across India, marking the sun’s transition into Capricorn. For those observing the fast, the ritual of breaking the fast (Parana) can be performed on January 15, 2026, between 7:15 AM and 9:21 AM.

Detailed Puja Rituals for Shattila Ekadashi

The day begins early with a purifying bath. After bathing, it is customary to sprinkle Ganga water (or clean water) throughout the home to create a sacred atmosphere. Since this is often the first Ekadashi of the new year, special attention is given to cleanliness and preparing items for charity.

  • Setting the Altar: Place an idol or picture of Lord Vishnu on a clean platform, alongside an image of Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Initial Offerings: Offer new clothes to the deities and sprinkle sesame seeds and Ganga water near the idols.
  • Lighting the Lamp: Light a lamp using ghee (clarified butter) and offer a garland of yellow flowers to Lord Vishnu.
  • Main Offerings: Present sesame seeds to Lord Vishnu. Offer a bhog (food offering) consisting of bananas, jaggery, and roasted chickpeas.
  • Prayers and Aarti: Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Lord Vishnu) and then perform the Aarti while meditating on the Lord as the sustainer of the universe.
  • Charity: After the main worship, donate sesame seeds and other items to the needy. This act of giving is considered highly auspicious and meritorious.

The Spiritual Benefits of Using Sesame

The repeated emphasis on sesame in this Ekadashi is not accidental. In Hindu tradition, sesame is considered a symbol of purification and immortality. It is believed to absorb negative energies and promote spiritual growth. By incorporating til into the six different activities mentioned—donation, bathing, eating, applying as a paste, offering in havan, and mixing with water—a devotee symbolically cleanses their body, mind, and soul. This comprehensive approach is said to not only remove current sins but also dissolve the karmic debts from past lives, paving the way for a more prosperous and spiritually aligned existence.

The Aarti of Lord Vishnu

Concluding the puja with the Aarti of Lord Vishnu is an essential part of the ritual. The following verses are traditionally sung, praising the Lord and seeking his grace:

Om Jai Jagdish Hare, Swami! Jai Jagdish Hare.
Bhaktajano ke sankat, kshan mein door kare.

Jo dhyave fal pave, dukh binse man ka.
Sukh-sampatti ghar aave, kasht mite tan ka.

Maata-pita tum mere, sharan gahoon kiski.
Tum bin aur na dooja, aas karoon jiski.

Tum pooran Paramatma, tum antaryami.
Parabrahm Pareshwar, tum sabke swami.

Tum karuna ke sagar, tum paalan karta.
Main moorakh khal kami, kripa karo bharta.

Tum ho ek agochar, sabke pranpati.
Kis vidhi milun dayamay! Tumko main kumati.

Deenbandhu dukhaharta, tum thakur mere.
Apne haath uthao, dwar para tere.

Vishay vikaar mitao, paap haro deva.
Shraddha-bhakti badhao, santan ki seva.

Tan-man-dhan aur sampatti, sab kuch hai tera.
Tera tujhko arpan, kya laage mera.

Jagdeeshwar ji ki aarti, jo koi nar gaave.
Kahat Shivanand Swami, manvanchhit fal paave.
