Pradosh Vrat in March 2026: Date, Auspicious Timing, and Rituals

Devotees of Lord Shiva are now looking ahead to the next significant fasting opportunity in the Hindu calendar. Following the completion of the first Pradosh Vrat in the month of Phalgun, attention turns to the second and final one of the month, which also marks the first Pradosh Vrat of March 2026. This sacred observance is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to hold immense spiritual merit for those who perform the rituals with sincerity and devotion.

According to traditional beliefs, observing this fast with unwavering faith helps fulfill sincere wishes and removes obstacles from one’s life. It is also considered highly effective for pacifying planetary afflictions and invoking the divine grace of Lord Shiva. To assist devotees in their preparations, here is a comprehensive guide covering the exact date, the most favorable time for worship, and a simple step-by-step ritual procedure.

When Will the Final Phalgun Pradosh Vrat Be Observed?

In the Hindu lunar calendar, the Pradosh Vrat is observed on the Trayodashi (thirteenth lunar day) of both the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) and Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) each month. For the month of Phalgun, the Shukla Paksha Trayodashi begins on the evening of February 28, 2026, at 8:43 PM and concludes on March 1, 2026, at 7:09 PM. Since the Pradosh period specifically refers to the time around sunset, the fast will be most appropriately kept on March 1.

As this day falls on a Sunday, the fast is specifically known as Ravi Pradosh Vrat. This particular observance is also associated with the Sun God (Surya). Therefore, in addition to worshipping Lord Shiva, chanting mantras dedicated to the Sun is considered especially auspicious on this day.

Auspicious Timing for the Pradosh Puja

The central ritual of the Pradosh Vrat must be performed during the Pradosh Kaal, the twilight period after sunset. On March 1, 2026, the most favorable window for performing the puja will be from 6:21 PM to 7:09 PM. It is widely believed that conducting the Shiva worship during this specific timeframe brings mental peace, prosperity, and the fulfillment of one’s heartfelt desires.

Simple Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi for Pradosh Vrat

Performing the Pradosh Vrat puja does not require elaborate arrangements. Follow these straightforward steps to observe the fast with devotion:

  • Morning Ritual: Begin the day by taking a purifying bath and making a solemn vow (Sankalp) to observe the fast with dedication.
  • Prepare the Altar: In the evening, during the Pradosh Kaal, set up a clean wooden platform (chowki) in a sanctified space. Place an idol of Lord Shiva or a Shiva Linga upon it.
  • Perform Abhishekam: Gently bathe the Shiva Linga with holy substances. The traditional sequence involves offering water, milk, curd, honey, and ghee. Conclude the abhishekam by offering Ganga jal (holy water).
  • Offer Sacred Items: Present offerings of belpatra (bilva leaves), dhatura, bhang, unbroken rice (akshat), fresh flowers, and seasonal fruits to the Shiva Linga.
  • Light Lamps and Incense: Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks (dhoop) to create a serene and sacred atmosphere.
  • Chant the Mantra: Meditate on Lord Shiva and chant the powerful mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” as many times as possible.
  • Conclude the Puja: Listen to or recite the Pradosh Vrat Katha (the story associated with the fast). Finally, perform the aarti of Lord Shiva and his divine family.
