Chaitra Navratri 2026: Day Two Observances and Rituals

As the sacred festival of Chaitra Navratri unfolds, the second day, falling on March 20, 2026, holds special significance. This day corresponds to the Dwitiya Tithi (second lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. Devotees across the country dedicate this day to worshipping Goddess Brahmacharini, the second manifestation of Goddess Durga.

The Divine Form of Goddess Brahmacharini

Goddess Brahmacharini embodies purity, serenity, and profound penance. Religious scriptures describe her as the epitome of devotion and self-discipline. In her iconography, she holds a japamala (prayer beads) in one hand and a kamandalu (water pot) in the other, symbolizing her ascetic nature. Worshipping her with sincere devotion on this day is believed to fulfill the heartfelt wishes of devotees and bestow divine blessings upon them.

Navratri Fasting Guidelines

Fasting during Navratri is a deeply personal spiritual practice, and different approaches suit different individuals. Understanding these variations helps devotees choose what aligns best with their health and commitment.

  • Nirjala Vrat: This rigorous fast involves abstaining from all food and grains, consuming only water throughout the day or for the entire nine days. Due to its demanding nature, it is typically undertaken by experienced practitioners.
  • Phalahar Vrat: A more common practice where devotees consume fruits, milk, yogurt, nuts, and specific fasting-approved foods once or twice daily. Dishes made from buckwheat flour and water chestnut flour are popular choices.
  • Single Meal Observance: Many individuals fast during the day and break their fast with one meal in the evening, after completing the day’s worship rituals.

Maintaining balanced nutrition is essential to sustain energy levels throughout the fasting period. Regular grains like wheat and rice are avoided, as are tamasic foods such as garlic and onion, to preserve a sattvic (pure) state of mind. Unless observing a water-only fast, devotees should ensure adequate hydration. The true purpose of fasting is not to inflict hardship on the body but to cultivate mental discipline and positivity.

Rules for the Akhand Jyoti (Eternal Flame)

Lighting an uninterrupted lamp throughout Navratri is a cherished tradition. Following specific guidelines ensures the ritual’s sanctity and effectiveness.

  • When lighting the lamp, chanting the mantra “Shubham Karoti Kalyanam…” is considered highly auspicious.
  • The lamp should be placed on a heap of grains.
  • A ghee lamp is traditionally placed on the right side, while an oil lamp is placed on the left.
  • The home should not be left empty while the flame is burning.
  • Regularly replenish ghee or oil to prevent the flame from extinguishing.
  • After the nine-day period, allow the flame to die out naturally rather than manually extinguishing it.

Proper Method for Lighting the Akhand Jyoti

Setting up the eternal flame requires careful preparation and devotion. Begin by taking a bath and cleaning the designated worship area. Spread a red cloth on a wooden platform. Draw a swastika symbol using rice or wheat grains, and place the lamp on top. Insert a wick into the lamp, pour ghee, and ignite the flame while chanting the name of Goddess Durga. According to Vastu principles, lighting the lamp in the southeast direction of the home is considered particularly favorable.

Why Barley is Sown During Navratri

On the first day of Navratri, during the Kalash Sthapana ritual, sowing barley seeds is an integral tradition. This practice carries deep mythological and religious significance, symbolizing prosperity, abundance, and agricultural bounty. Barley is regarded as the first grain in Hindu tradition. It is believed that if the barley sprouts grow well and healthily during the nine days, the household will experience happiness, prosperity, and harmony throughout the year.

Goddess Arrives on a Palanquin: What It Signifies

According to Devi Purana, the mode of Goddess Durga’s arrival each year carries symbolic meaning. This year, she is said to have arrived on a palanquin. This is traditionally not considered a favorable omen for the world. It is believed to signal potential challenges such as widespread illnesses, conflicts, social unrest, or economic slowdowns. Devotees interpret this as a call for increased spiritual practice and vigilance.

Ashtami and Navami Dates for Chaitra Navratri 2026

Chaitra Navratri 2026 begins on March 19 and concludes on March 27. The eighth day (Ashtami) and ninth day (Navami) hold special importance, marked by Kanya Pujan (worshipping young girls as embodiments of the goddess) and Havan (sacred fire ritual). This year, Ashtami falls on March 26 and Navami on March 27. Devotees may perform Kanya Pujan and Havan on either day, based on family tradition and convenience.

Durga Saptashti Path

Reciting the Durga Saptashti during Navratri is considered highly meritorious. This sacred text invokes the goddess’s protection and blessings. Key verses include:

Om jnaaninaam api chetaamsi devee bhagavatee hi saa। Balaad aakrshya mohaaya mahaamaaya prayachchhati॥

Durge smrta harasi bheetim ashesh jantoh svastheh smrta matimateeva shubhaam dadasi। Daaridrya dukha bhaya haarini ka tvad anyaa sarvopakaara karanaya sadaardrachitta॥

Sarvamangala maangalye shive sarvaartha saadhike। Sharanye tryambake Gauri Naaraayani namostu te॥

Sharanyaagata deenaarta paritraana paraayane। Sarvasyaarti hare Devi Naaraayani namostu te॥

Sarvabaadha prashamanam trailokyasyaakhileshwari। Evameva tvayaa kaaryam asmad vairi vinaashanam॥

The Mythological Story of Goddess Shailputri

The story of Goddess Shailputri, worshipped on the first day of Navratri, is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. Once, King Daksha organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ceremony) and invited all deities except Lord Shiva. When Goddess Sati learned of this, she expressed her desire to attend. Lord Shiva advised against going without an invitation, but eventually relented due to her insistence.

Upon arriving at her parental home, Sati faced disrespect. Her sisters mocked her, and King Daksha spoke insultingly of Lord Shiva. Unable to bear her husband’s humiliation, Sati immolated herself in the yogic fire. This tragedy enraged Lord Shiva, who destroyed the yajna. Later, Sati was reborn as the daughter of King Himalaya, and came to be known as Shailputri. She eventually remarried Lord Shiva. This is why Goddess Shailputri is worshipped with special reverence on the first day of Navratri, with devotees offering her ghee as a sacred offering.
