Chaitra Purnima 2026: Determining the Correct Date for Fasting and Rituals

The full moon day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, known as Chaitra Purnima, holds significant religious importance. Devotees observe fasts, take holy baths, and perform charity on this day. This year, the precise date has created some confusion as the full moon lunar day spans across two consecutive days: April 1 and April 2. Understanding the correct timing for the fast and the auspicious moments for bathing and donations is essential for observing the rituals properly.

Understanding the Dual Date Confusion

According to the Drik Panchang, the Chaitra Purnima tithi (lunar day) begins at 7:06 AM on Wednesday, April 1, and concludes at 7:41 AM on Thursday, April 2. Because this period covers two sunrises, traditions dictate different activities for each day. The general rule is that the day on which the full moon tithi is present at sunrise is ideal for bathing and charity, while the day on which the moon rises during the full moon tithi is best for keeping the fast.

Optimal Day for Holy Bath and Charity (Snan-Daan)

On April 1, the full moon tithi begins after sunrise (which occurs at 6:11 AM). However, on April 2, the sunrise (at 6:10 AM) happens while the full moon tithi is still active. Based on this principle of Udayatithi (the tithi prevailing at sunrise), April 2 is considered the most favorable day for performing the sacred bath and offering donations. This timing ensures the ritual aligns with the full moon energy of the day.

Correct Day for Observing the Fast (Vrat)

The fast is traditionally observed on the day when the moon rises during the full moon tithi. On April 1, the moonrise occurs at 6:11 PM, which falls squarely within the Purnima tithi. In contrast, on April 2, the moon rises at 7:07 PM, but by that time the tithi has shifted to Pratipada (the first day of the waning phase). Therefore, April 1 is the correct day for keeping the Chaitra Purnima fast.

Auspicious Timings and Ritual Schedule

For April 2 (Bathing and Charity): The Brahma Muhurta, considered the most sacred time for bathing, begins at 4:38 AM and lasts until 5:24 AM. The Abhijit Muhurta, an auspicious window for various rituals, falls between 12:00 PM and 12:50 PM.

For April 1 (Fasting and Worship): The morning hours from 6:11 AM to 9:18 AM are highly favorable for performing the Satyanarayan puja. After sunset at 6:39 PM, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi during the Pradosh Kaal. The evening concludes with offering arghya (a water offering) to the moon.

Conjunction of Auspicious Yogas

April 1 is particularly blessed with multiple beneficial yogas. The Ravi Yoga remains active from sunrise until 4:17 PM, promoting success and vitality. Immediately following this, the Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga begins and continues until sunrise the next day, a period considered excellent for initiating new ventures. Additionally, the Vriddhi Yoga prevails until 2:51 PM, after which the Dhruva Yoga takes over, providing stability and focus for spiritual practices.

Spiritual Significance of Chaitra Purnima

Observing the fast and performing rituals on Chaitra Purnima is believed to bring peace and prosperity to the home. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on this day is said to alleviate financial struggles and attract wealth. Offering prayers to the moon at night strengthens mental fortitude and helps pacify any lunar afflictions in one’s birth chart. Furthermore, taking a holy dip, giving charity, and performing tarpan (offerings to ancestors) are thought to cleanse past sins and bestow immense spiritual merit.

  • The full moon tithi spans April 1 and April 2.
  • Bathing and charity are best performed on April 2.
  • The fast should be observed on April 1.
  • Multiple auspicious yogas coincide on April 1.
  • Rituals include Lakshmi puja, moon worship, and ancestor offerings.
