Varuthini Ekadashi 2026: Key Dietary Guidelines for a Successful Fast

According to Hindu tradition, observing the Ekadashi fast during the Krishna Paksha of the Vaishakha month is believed to fulfill devotees’ deepest wishes and bring success in all aspects of life. The month of Vaishakha is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. To ensure the Varuthini Ekadashi fast is observed correctly, it is essential to understand which foods are permitted and which must be strictly avoided.

Understanding Varuthini Ekadashi

Varuthini Ekadashi falls annually on the eleventh lunar day (Ekadashi) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Vaishakha month. This year, the fast will be observed on April 13. Devotees who keep this fast with sincerity are believed to have their desires granted and experience success in all endeavors. Since Vaishakha is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, special attention must be paid to the rules governing this observance.

What to Eat During Varuthini Ekadashi

For those not observing a completely waterless (Nirjala) fast, several light and pure foods are recommended to maintain energy and spiritual discipline.

  • Fresh Fruits: Bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, and papaya are excellent choices. They provide natural energy and are easy to digest, making them ideal for a fasting day.
  • Dairy Products: Home-prepared milk, yogurt, buttermilk, and paneer (cottage cheese) are considered pure and suitable for the fast. These items are nourishing without being heavy.
  • Dry Fruits and Nuts: Almonds, raisins, cashews, and walnuts can be consumed in moderation. They help sustain energy levels and keep the stomach feeling full for longer periods.
  • Root Vegetables: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and taro root (arbi) can be lightly cooked and eaten. These are commonly included in fasting meals across many traditions.
  • Special Flours: Buckwheat flour (kuttu ka atta) and water chestnut flour (singhare ka atta) are excellent alternatives to regular grains. They can be used to make flatbreads or savory fritters.
  • Sago (Sabudana): Sago khichdi or other dishes made from sago pearls are considered a staple fasting food, providing both energy and satiety.
  • Plain Tea or Coffee: If desired, tea or coffee can be consumed, but it is best taken without milk or sugar to maintain the fast’s purity.

What to Avoid During Varuthini Ekadashi

To preserve the spiritual significance of the fast, certain foods must be strictly avoided. These items are believed to disrupt the fast’s sanctity and effectiveness.

  • Grains and Cereals: Rice, wheat, and all common grains are prohibited, as they go against the core principles of the Ekadashi fast.
  • Legumes (Except Moong Dal): Most lentils and beans should be avoided, with the exception of moong dal (split green gram), which is sometimes permitted.
  • Corn and Mustard: Corn, mustard seeds (rai), and any food products made from them should be completely avoided.
  • Common Breads and Dishes: Regular roti, chapati, paratha, idli, and dosa are not allowed during the fast.
  • Onion and Garlic: These ingredients are considered tamasic (promoting inertia and negativity) and must be avoided entirely.
  • Non-Vegetarian Foods: Meat, fish, and eggs are strictly prohibited throughout the observance.
  • Heavy, Oily Foods: Foods cooked in excessive oil or ghee should be avoided, as they compromise the sattvic (pure and harmonious) nature of the fast.

Auspicious Timings for Varuthini Ekadashi 2026

Puja (Worship) Muhurta

Two favorable time slots are recommended for performing the Varuthini Ekadashi puja:

  • First Muhurta: 5:58 AM to 7:34 AM – Considered the most auspicious (Amrit-Sarvottam).
  • Second Muhurta: 9:10 AM to 10:46 AM – Considered highly favorable (Shubh-Uttam).

Bath (Snan) Muhurta

The Brahma Muhurta for ritual bathing is from 4:28 AM to 5:13 AM.

Abhijit Muhurta

The Abhijit Muhurta, an especially powerful time window, falls from 11:56 AM to 12:47 PM.

Parana (Breaking the Fast) Timing

The Varuthini Ekadashi fast will be concluded on April 14. The Parana (breaking the fast) window is from 6:54 AM to 8:31 AM. The Hari Vasara period ends at 6:54 AM on the Parana day, and it is considered auspicious to break the fast only after this time has passed.
