Understanding Vikat Sankashti Chaturthi 2026

In Hindu tradition, Lord Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles and the foremost deity to be worshipped. His blessings are believed to clear hurdles from auspicious endeavors and pave the way for success. Among the many observances dedicated to him, the fast of Vikat Sankashti Chaturthi holds special significance. While Sankashti Chaturthi is observed every month, the one falling during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the Vaishakha month is considered particularly powerful.

When Will Vikat Sankashti Chaturthi Be Observed in 2026?

For those planning to keep this sacred fast, the date falls on April 5, 2026. According to the Hindu calendar, the Chaturthi tithi (fourth lunar day) of the Krishna Paksha in Vaishakha month begins at 11:59 AM on April 5 and concludes at 2:10 PM on April 6. Based on the prevailing sunrise and moonrise timings, the fast will be observed on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

Auspicious Timings for the Day

  • Puja Muhurat (Best time for worship): 6:20 PM to 8:06 PM
  • Abhijit Muhurat (Most favorable window): 11:59 AM to 12:49 PM

The Significance of Vikat Sankashti Chaturthi

This particular Chaturthi is believed to be exceptionally effective in removing life’s difficulties. Devotees who observe the fast with sincerity are said to receive Lord Ganesha’s special grace, which helps overcome persistent challenges and grants relief from trying circumstances. The word “Vikat” itself denotes something formidable or challenging, and this observance is specifically meant to help devotees navigate through life’s toughest phases.

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi (Worship Procedure)

Performing the rituals correctly is essential for receiving the full benefits of this fast. Here is a straightforward guide to the worship process:

  • Morning Preparation: Begin your day by taking a bath and wearing clean, fresh clothes. This physical purification sets the right mindset for the spiritual observances ahead.
  • Setting Up the Altar: Place a clean red or yellow cloth on a wooden platform (chowki). Install an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha on this cloth, creating a sacred space for worship.
  • Abhishekam (Holy Bath): Bathe the idol with Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar). After this, rinse the idol with clean water to purify it completely.
  • Offering of Garments and Adornments: Offer new clothes or a piece of cloth to the deity. Then apply vermilion (sindoor) to the idol’s forehead. Present modak (sweet dumplings), raw rice grains (akshata), fresh flowers and fruits, and durva grass—all of which are particularly dear to Lord Ganesha.
  • Naivedya (Food Offering): Prepare besan ke laddu (gram flour sweets) as a special offering. Along with these, offer seasonal fruits as part of the bhog (consecrated food).
  • Aarti and Moon Worship: Perform the evening aarti with devotion. After sunset, when the moon rises, offer arghya (a water offering) to the moon, as this is an essential part of the Sankashti Chaturthi ritual.

The Sacred Ganesha Aarti

Reciting the traditional aarti with devotion enhances the spiritual experience. The verses praise Lord Ganesha as the son of Parvati and Shiva, describe his elephant-headed form with one tusk and four arms, and celebrate his vehicle—the mouse. The aarti also speaks of his compassionate nature: granting sight to the blind, healing lepers, blessing childless couples with progeny, and providing wealth to the poor. The concluding lines seek his protection for the humble and ask for the fulfillment of sincere wishes.

Additional Festivals in April 2026

April 2026 brings several other important Hindu observances. Devotees may also want to note the Ekadashi fasts falling this month, as well as Akshay Tritiya, which is considered one of the most auspicious days for new beginnings and significant purchases. After the conclusion of Kharmas (an inauspicious period), the wedding season resumes, with many auspicious dates available from April through December.
