The Sacred Significance of Adhik Mass 2026: Worshiping Shaligram and Tulsi

Adhik Mass, also known as Malmas or Purushottam Maas, began on May 17, 2026. This extra month in the Hindu lunar calendar holds profound spiritual importance. Unlike regular months dedicated to various deities, this period is exclusively associated with Lord Vishnu, who is revered as its presiding lord. The term “Purushottam” itself refers to the Supreme Being, another name for Lord Vishnu, which is why this month is called Purushottam Maas. Ancient scriptures emphasize that performing rituals and prayers to Lord Vishnu during this time yields multiplied spiritual benefits.

Why Does Adhik Mass Occur?

The occurrence of Adhik Mass is rooted in the astronomical differences between the solar and lunar years. A solar year spans approximately 365 days and 6 hours, while a lunar year consists of about 354 days. This creates a gap of roughly 11 days between the two calendars. Over three years, this discrepancy accumulates to about one month. To realign the lunar and solar cycles, an additional lunar month is inserted every third year. This intercalary month is what Hindus call Malmas or Adhik Mass. It is not merely a calendar adjustment but a spiritually charged period for introspection and devotion.

Shaligram: The Manifest Form of Lord Vishnu

According to the Skanda Purana, the Shaligram shila (sacred stone) is considered the direct and self-manifested form of Lord Vishnu. These stones, primarily obtained from the Gandaki River in Nepal, are revered as extremely pure and divine. It is believed that wherever a Shaligram resides, Lord Vishnu himself dwells permanently. The Padma Purana states that worshiping the Shaligram yields the same merit as performing numerous grand sacrifices. During Purushottam Maas, performing an abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Shaligram with water, panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar), sandalwood paste, and fresh Tulsi leaves is considered especially rewarding. Chanting the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” during this ritual is said to quickly please Lord Vishnu and bring his blessings.

The Divine Presence of Tulsi

The Padma Purana and Brahmavaivarta Purana describe Tulsi (holy basil) as an embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Without offering Tulsi leaves, the worship of Lord Vishnu is considered incomplete. Legend has it that Goddess Tulsi performed intense penance to attain Lord Vishnu as her husband. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Vishnu accepted her as his beloved forever. This is why every offering and prayer made to Lord Vishnu holds special significance when Tulsi is included. Worshiping the Tulsi plant during Purushottam Maas, offering water to it, and lighting a lamp near it in the evening is believed to bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to the home.

Rituals and Observances for Purushottam Maas

The Narada Purana emphasizes that observing strict rules and devotionally worshiping Lord Vishnu during Purushottam Maas can cleanse the sins of many lifetimes. The recommended daily routine includes:

  • Taking a bath early in the morning and wearing yellow-colored clothes, which are auspicious for Lord Vishnu.
  • Performing a combined worship of the Shaligram stone and the Tulsi plant.
  • Offering Lord Vishnu yellow flowers, chana dal (split chickpeas), panchamrit, and fresh Tulsi leaves.
  • Reciting sacred texts like the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu), the Srimad Bhagavatam, or the Bhagavad Gita.

Observing fasts, giving charity, and participating in spiritual discourses (satsang) during this month are said to grant inexhaustible merit. It is a time dedicated to self-purification, devotion, and spiritual practice.

The Combined Power of Shaligram and Tulsi Worship

According to the Skanda Purana, a person who performs the combined worship of Shaligram and Tulsi during Purushottam Maas receives the special grace of both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. This dual devotion is believed to fill the home with wealth, grains, happiness, prosperity, and positive energy. From a religious perspective, this month is considered the finest opportunity for soul cleansing, deep devotion, and focused spiritual discipline. This is why devotees place immense importance on the worship of Lord Vishnu and Tulsi throughout the entire Purushottam Maas, seeking divine blessings for a harmonious and prosperous life.
