The Tradition of Dividing Qurbani Meat into Three Equal Shares

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is one of the most significant and sacred festivals in Islam. It embodies the values of sacrifice, devotion, and complete submission to the will of Allah. On this day, after performing the Eid prayer, Muslims around the world offer the sacrifice of an animal such as a goat, sheep, cow, or camel. This act commemorates the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail in obedience to Allah’s command. However, the ritual of Qurbani extends beyond the act of slaughtering an animal. In Islamic tradition, the proper distribution of the meat is equally important. This is why the meat from the sacrificed animal is traditionally divided into three equal portions—a practice that carries deep lessons of humanity, equality, and compassion for the less fortunate.

Why Is the Meat Divided into Three Parts?

According to Islamic customs, the meat from Qurbani is split into three equal shares. The first portion is kept by the person performing the sacrifice for their own family. The second portion is given to relatives, friends, and neighbors. The third and final portion is reserved for the poor and needy, ensuring that everyone can partake in the joy and blessings of Eid-ul-Adha. This division is not merely a ritual—it is a powerful reminder of social responsibility. It encourages sharing, fosters community bonds, and ensures that those who cannot afford meat are not left out of the celebration. Interestingly, Islamic teachings also allow flexibility: if there are no needy people available, the individual may keep all the meat. Conversely, if someone wishes, they can donate the entire amount to the poor.

Essential Rules for Qurbani on Bakrid

Performing Qurbani correctly requires adherence to several important guidelines. These rules ensure that the sacrifice is valid and spiritually meaningful.

Health and Age Requirements for the Animal

The animal chosen for sacrifice must be healthy and free from any obvious defects. Islam specifies minimum age requirements for different animals to ensure they are mature enough for the ritual:

  • A goat or sheep must be at least one year old.
  • A sheep or lamb can be a minimum of six months old.
  • A buffalo or cow must be at least two years old.
  • A camel must be five years or older.

Only after the animal has reached the prescribed age is the sacrifice considered valid and acceptable. The condition of the animal is taken very seriously—any significant illness, injury, or deformity can render the Qurbani invalid.

The Deeper Purpose of Qurbani

The act of Qurbani is not simply about going through a ritual. It is a profound expression of faith, selflessness, and obedience to Allah. The true spirit of the sacrifice lies in the willingness to give up something valuable for the sake of God and to share blessings with others. Helping the needy and fostering a sense of community are central to this practice.

The Origin of the Qurbani Tradition

The tradition of Qurbani traces back to the story of Prophet Ibrahim, a man of immense faith and sincerity. To test his devotion, Allah commanded him in a dream to sacrifice his most beloved possession—his only son, Ismail. Without hesitation, Prophet Ibrahim prepared to carry out the command, trusting completely in Allah’s wisdom. As he was about to perform the sacrifice, Allah, pleased with his unwavering submission, sent a ram from heaven to be sacrificed in place of Ismail. This event established the practice of Qurbani in Islam, symbolizing the ultimate act of surrender and devotion. Ever since, Muslims have observed this tradition during Eid-ul-Adha, honoring the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice and spreading the values of faith, charity, and unity.
