The Significance of Concluding the Bada Mangal Fast

The Bada Mangal festival, observed during the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, holds deep spiritual importance for devotees of Lord Hanuman. On this day, worshippers perform elaborate rituals and observe a fast to seek the deity’s blessings. Many individuals commit to fasting for a specific number of Tuesdays—commonly 11, 21, or more—as a vow to honor their faith. However, what is often overlooked is that properly concluding the fast is just as crucial as observing it. This concluding ceremony, known as ‘Udyapan,’ is considered essential for the fast to bear its full spiritual fruit. Without it, the observance is regarded as incomplete.

According to traditional beliefs, once the predetermined number of fasts is completed, the devotee should perform the Udyapan on the final Tuesday with full ritual precision. This act ensures that the seeker receives the complete benefits of their devotion and that Lord Hanuman’s grace continues to illuminate their life.

Why Udyapan Is Essential

If you have taken a vow to observe a set number of Bada Mangal fasts, performing the Udyapan upon completion is mandatory. This ceremony represents the fulfillment of your vow. Without it, the fast’s spiritual rewards may remain incomplete. Therefore, it is vital to carry out this process on the last Tuesday of your fast series. The Udyapan serves as the formal closure, sealing your devotion and inviting lasting positivity into your life.

Step-by-Step Udyapan Ritual

Morning Preparation

On the day of Udyapan, wake up early and take a bath. Wear clean clothes, preferably in shades of red or yellow, which are considered auspicious for Hanuman worship. Clean the designated prayer area thoroughly.

Setting Up the Altar

Spread a red cloth on the clean space and place an idol or picture of Lord Hanuman on it. This establishes a sacred focal point for the rituals.

Offering Items

During the worship, offer vermilion (sindoor), sandalwood paste, unbroken rice grains (akshata), and fresh flowers to the deity. Light a lamp and perform the aarti. An important offering is jasmine oil, which is believed to be especially dear to Lord Hanuman. Ensure you include this in your ritual.

Special Food Offerings

Offering specific food items to Lord Hanuman on the Udyapan day is considered highly auspicious. Ideal choices include boondi ladoos or besan ladoos, churma (a sweet crushed wheat dish), jaggery, and roasted chickpeas. Tradition holds that offering approximately 1.25 kilograms (sava kilo) of prasad brings special blessings. This practice is believed to remove obstacles from life and pave the way for happiness and prosperity.

The Importance of Charity

Feeding the Needy

Charity holds great significance on the Udyapan day. Within your means, arrange meals for 5, 7, or 11 needy individuals or Brahmins, and offer them a token of gratitude (dakshina). Donating red clothing is also considered highly meritorious. If possible, organize a community feast (bhandara) or distribute prasad at a temple.

Offering Water and Food

Given the hot summer season, distributing water, sherbet, or fruits to others is considered a virtuous act. This simple gesture can bring immense spiritual merit.

Feeding Monkeys

To please Lord Hanuman, it is auspicious to feed monkeys with jaggery, chickpeas, or bananas on this day. This act is believed to invoke the deity’s grace and reduce life’s hardships.

Important Guidelines for the Day

  • Maintain cleanliness in both your home and the prayer area.
  • Adopt a sattvic (pure) diet and behavior throughout the day.
  • Avoid anger, negativity, and harsh words.
  • Help those in need and arrange water for birds, which is considered a virtuous deed.

How to Break the Fast (Paran)

After completing the evening prayers, charity, and prasad distribution, you can break your fast. During the paran, consume only sattvic food and avoid garlic and onions. Many devotees also refrain from salt on this day, choosing to end their fast by eating only the prasad that was offered to the deity.

Can You Continue the Fast After Udyapan?

Once the Udyapan is performed, your initial vow is considered fulfilled. However, if your devotion inspires you to continue fasting, you can take a new vow and resume the practice. In this way, a properly conducted Udyapan not only completes the original fast but also brings lasting peace, happiness, and positive energy into your life.

By following these guidelines, you ensure that your Bada Mangal fast reaches its rightful conclusion, allowing you to fully receive the spiritual rewards and blessings of Lord Hanuman.
