Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: Auspicious Planetary Alignments, Rituals, and Spiritual Importance

In the Hindu tradition, Ekadashi holds a revered place among spiritual observances. Among all the Ekadashis that occur throughout the year, the Nirjala Ekadashi that falls during the Jyeshtha month is particularly awaited by devotees of Lord Vishnu. According to religious beliefs, observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast and performing the associated rituals bestows the same spiritual merit as observing all 24 Ekadashis combined. This year, several highly favorable planetary alignments coincide with this sacred day, making worship especially beneficial and rewarding. Let us explore the date, significance, and proper way to observe this important fast.

Date and Timing of Nirjala Ekadashi 2026

As per the Hindu lunar calendar, the Ekadashi tithi (date) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) in the month of Jyeshtha begins on June 24, 2026, at 8:09 PM and concludes on June 25, 2026, at 9:14 PM. Based on the Udayatithi system—where the prevailing tithi at sunrise determines the observance—the Nirjala Ekadashi fast will be observed on Friday, June 25, 2026.

Favorable Planetary Combinations on Nirjala Ekadashi

This year, Nirjala Ekadashi is marked by the convergence of several auspicious yogas (planetary configurations). Among them, the Ravi Yoga, Shiva Yoga, and Siddha Yoga are aligning simultaneously. In Vedic astrology, performing spiritual practices during these yogas is considered exceptionally beneficial. Engaging in the worship of Lord Vishnu, chanting sacred mantras, and offering charity during these periods is believed to yield multiplied spiritual rewards.

Additionally, this year Nirjala Ekadashi falls on a Thursday (Guruvar), which further elevates the significance of the fast. The combination of Thursday and Ekadashi creates a powerful synergy, making it especially auspicious to worship both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. This joint veneration is thought to attract divine blessings for prosperity and well-being.

Auspicious Timings for Worship

Devotees will have two primary windows for performing the puja on Nirjala Ekadashi. The first is the Brahma Muhurta, which lasts from 4:05 AM to 4:45 AM. The second is the Abhijit Muhurta, which occurs from 11:56 AM to 12:52 PM. Conducting the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi during these specific time slots is considered highly favorable and likely to bring maximum spiritual benefit.

Step-by-Step Rituals for Nirjala Ekadashi

To observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast correctly, follow these traditional steps:

  • Morning Preparation: Wake up early, take a purifying bath, and wear clean, fresh clothes. Take a solemn vow (sankalp) to observe the fast with full devotion.
  • Worship Procedure: Begin the puja by offering prayers to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Use yellow flowers, fresh Tulsi (holy basil) leaves, and yellow sweets as offerings. Light a lamp filled with ghee (clarified butter) to invoke divine presence.
  • Chanting and Mantras: Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Lord Vishnu), the Vishnu Chalisa, and chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” with focused intent.
  • Charity and Donation: After completing the worship, take a resolve to donate. Set aside offerings of food, clothing, or money for Brahmins and the underprivileged, as charity on this day is considered highly meritorious.

The Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi

Nirjala Ekadashi derives its name from the unique austerity it demands: the fast is observed without consuming either food or water. This makes it the most rigorous among all Ekadashi fasts. The word “Nirjala” literally means “without water,” reflecting the complete abstinence from all forms of sustenance for the entire day. Religious texts emphasize that when this fast is performed with sincerity and according to prescribed rules, it pleases Lord Vishnu and brings abundant happiness, prosperity, and spiritual growth into the devotee’s life.
