Nirjala Ekadashi 2026: A Complete Guide to the Sacred Fast

Nirjala Ekadashi holds a special place among all Ekadashi observances in the Hindu calendar. This day is considered exceptionally powerful, as the scriptures and the Padma Purana describe it as the most beneficial of all Ekadashi fasts. It is believed that keeping this fast bestows the same spiritual merit as observing all the Ekadashis that occur throughout the year. The fast requires total abstinence from both food and water, making it a test of deep devotion and self-discipline. As per religious texts, the fast should be concluded on the Dwadashi Tithi, the day following Ekadashi. This article provides a detailed overview of the auspicious timing for breaking the fast, the complete ritual procedure, and the profound significance of Nirjala Ekadashi.

When to Break the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast in 2026

According to the Hindu calendar, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast will be observed on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The ritual of breaking the fast, known as Parana, will take place on the next day, Friday, June 26, 2026. The most auspicious window for Parana is during the morning hours. Devotees should break their fast between 5:25 AM and 8:13 AM on June 26. It is considered highly favorable to conclude the fast and consume food and water within this specific timeframe to receive the full benefits of the observance.

Understanding the Rules of the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast

The defining characteristic of this fast is its strict nature. Consuming water during the Ekadashi Tithi is prohibited, as the vow is taken to remain completely without water. The correct time to drink water is the following day, during the Dwadashi Tithi, after sunrise and at the time of Parana. The proper procedure involves waking up early on Dwadashi, taking a holy bath, and performing a dedicated worship of Lord Vishnu. After the puja, while meditating on the Lord, one should first drink water and then formally break the fast. Following this, a light, sattvic meal or fruits can be consumed.

The Legend of Ekadashi Mata

Ancient scriptures narrate the story behind this sacred day. In a bygone era, a powerful demon named Mura defeated the gods and seized control of heaven. Troubled and helpless, the gods sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. The Lord confronted Mura and his army, leading to a fierce battle. During a pause in the war, Lord Vishnu rested. Seizing the opportunity, Mura attempted to attack the sleeping deity. At that very moment, a powerful goddess emerged from the Lord’s divine radiance. She vanquished Mura, liberating the gods from his tyranny. When Lord Vishnu awoke, he was pleased with the goddess’s valor and asked her to choose a boon. The goddess prayed that all devotees who observe a fast on the day of her appearance would have their sins destroyed and attain liberation. Lord Vishnu granted this wish. Thus, the tradition of the Ekadashi fast was established, and this day continues to hold immense religious significance.

Benefits of Observing the Nirjala Ekadashi Fast

It is widely believed that observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast grants the devotee the equivalent merit of fasting on all the Ekadashis of the entire year. This observance is also considered highly beneficial for longevity and health. Furthermore, it is thought to help destroy sins committed knowingly or unknowingly over many lifetimes. For these reasons, performing this fast with complete devotion and sincerity is strongly recommended.

What to Eat When Breaking the Fast

When breaking the fast, one should first chant the mantra ‘Om Vishnave Namah’ while meditating on Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Placing a Tulsi leaf in the mouth is considered an auspicious way to begin the Parana ritual. After this, consuming a few drops of Ganga water is recommended. The food eaten after breaking the fast should always be light, pure, and sattvic in nature. It is believed that this ensures the devotee receives the complete and full fruit of the fast.

The Complete Ritual for Breaking the Fast (Parana Vidhi)

On the day of Dwadashi, wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Then, perform a detailed worship of Lord Vishnu. The Padma Purana advises that the worship should be conducted with offerings of sandalwood paste, incense, flowers, and fine garments. Additionally, one should make a sankalpa (a solemn vow) with a water-filled pot. This pot should be prepared in advance to be given as charity. While making the sankalpa with the pot, chant the following mantra:

‘Devadeva Hrishikesha Samsararnavataraka, Udakumbhapradanena Naya Mam Paramat Gatim.’

The meaning of this mantra is: “O Lord of gods, Hrishikesha, who helps us cross the ocean of worldly existence, through the donation of this water-filled pot, please grant me the supreme destination.”

After completing the puja on Dwadashi, the devotee should first offer food to Brahmins before eating themselves. It is believed that the Parana should begin with water and a Tulsi leaf. According to the Padma Purana, a person who performs the Nirjala Ekadashi fast with this complete procedure is freed from all sins. Furthermore, they invite happiness and prosperity into their life and receive the special grace of Lord Vishnu.

The Scriptural Basis for the Parana Ritual

The tradition of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, as described in the Padma Purana, is observed with great reverence and strict adherence to rules. According to the calendar, the fast will be kept on Thursday, June 25. On this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu in the morning and observe a fast without water for the entire day. The scriptures prescribe that the fast must be concluded on the following day, the Dwadashi Tithi. Therefore, on June 26, the fast should be broken at the auspicious time and with the proper rituals. Doing so ensures the complete reward of the fast and maintains the continuous blessings of Lord Vishnu.

The Importance of Parana

Breaking the Nirjala Ekadashi fast on the Dwadashi Tithi is considered absolutely essential, as it is the final and most important step of the entire observance. Parana means the ritualistic conclusion of the fast. The scriptures state that if the Parana is not performed within the Dwadashi Tithi at the correct time, the fast is considered incomplete, and its full merit is not attained. It is believed that by breaking the fast at the proper time, the devotee receives the complete spiritual benefit, divine blessings, and the grace of Lord Vishnu.

The Auspicious Time for Parana

Devotees observing the Nirjala Ekadashi fast can perform the Parana on June 26 between 5:25 AM and 8:13 AM. According to religious beliefs, breaking the fast in the morning during the Dwadashi Tithi is considered the most auspicious and rewarding. Therefore, devotees should conclude their fast within this designated time frame, following the prescribed rituals, to receive the Lord’s blessings.

The Tradition of Donating Sattu on Nirjala Ekadashi

Donating Sattu (a flour made from roasted gram) on the sacred occasion of Nirjala Ekadashi is considered highly meritorious. During the hot summer months, Sattu provides coolness and energy to the body, making this donation particularly beneficial for those in need. According to religious beliefs, offering Sattu on this day brings spiritual merit and provides an opportunity to help others. This act of charity is seen as a symbol of service, compassion, and goodwill.
