The Sacred Bathing Festival of Lord Jagannath

In the temple town of Puri, Odisha, one of the most significant religious ceremonies preceding the world-famous Rath Yatra takes place: the Snan Yatra, or the grand bathing festival. This ritual, observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyestha, involves a special ceremonial bath for Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and their sister Goddess Subhadra. Because of this tradition, the day is also widely known as Snan Purnima. In 2026, this sacred event falls on Monday, June 29, while the spectacular Rath Yatra is scheduled for July 16, 2026.

The bathing ceremony uses holy water drawn from a unique well, which is opened only once a year. After this elaborate purification, the deities are believed to fall symbolically ill, entering a period of seclusion that lasts approximately 15 days.

Bathing with 108 Golden Pots

The Snan Yatra is widely regarded as the formal inauguration of the Rath Yatra festivities. On this day, the three deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra—are bathed with sacred water from 108 golden pots. This water is sourced from a special well that remains sealed throughout the year, only to be opened for this single occasion. Priests mix the water with specific herbal concoctions and aromatic fragrances before pouring it over the idols.

Following the bath, the deities are adorned in elaborate attire. On this particular day, Lord Jagannath is dressed in a special elephant costume, known as Gajavesha. This tradition has its roots in an ancient legend. It is said that a devotee of Lord Ganesha once wished to see Lord Jagannath, who then appeared before him in the form of Gajanana, the elephant-headed god. Honoring this tale, Lord Jagannath continues to wear the Gajavesha every year during the Snan Yatra.

The 15-Day Period of Seclusion

After the grand bathing ritual, Lord Jagannath is believed to fall symbolically unwell. Consequently, he retreats into a 15-day period of isolation, known as Anavasara or Ansara. During this time, the temple’s main sanctum is closed to the public, and devotees are unable to have darshan (sacred viewing) of the deities.

Within the temple, priests attend to the ailing lord, offering him various herbal decoctions and medicinal preparations as bhoga (food offerings). This unique tradition beautifully illustrates a deeply human aspect of the divine—that even gods can experience illness and require healing. The period serves as a reminder of the cycle of rest, recovery, and rejuvenation. After these 15 days of rest, the lord emerges in a rejuvenated, youthful form, ready to bless his devotees once again.

The Journey Begins: The Rath Yatra

Once Lord Jagannath has fully recovered, a series of additional religious rites are performed. Following these ceremonies, the three deities—Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra—mount three magnificent, towering wooden chariots. These chariots then proceed on their journey to the Gundicha Temple, marking the start of the Rath Yatra.

Millions of devotees from across India and the world gather in Puri for this grand procession. They eagerly participate by pulling the thick ropes attached to the chariots, an act believed to be immensely meritorious. It is widely believed that even touching these sacred ropes can liberate a person from the endless cycle of birth and death. Furthermore, witnessing the Rath Yatra is said to wash away one’s sins and grant the same spiritual merit as bathing at all the holy pilgrimage sites combined.
