Understanding Vat Purnima Vrat in 2026

Among the many sacred observances in Hindu tradition, Vat Purnima Vrat holds a special place for married women. This fast is undertaken with deep devotion to pray for a husband’s longevity, robust health, enduring happiness, and unbroken marital fortune. It symbolizes the unbreakable bond between husband and wife, reflecting dedication and fidelity. On this auspicious day, women perform rituals around the banyan tree, known as Vat Vriksha, and listen to the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan. This practice is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and joy to married life. In 2026, this significant fast falls on Monday, June 29. While it is observed with great reverence in states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and parts of South India, a similar fast is kept in many regions of North India on the new moon day of the Jyeshtha month.

Auspicious Timing and Date

According to the Hindu calendar, the full moon date begins at 3:06 AM on June 29 and concludes at 5:26 AM on June 30. Two favorable celestial alignments enhance the spiritual merit of this day. The Shukla Yoga remains active from sunrise until 2:36 PM, after which the Brahma Yoga begins. Performing the worship of the banyan tree, observing the fast, and chanting mantras during these yogas is considered highly auspicious.

Spiritual Significance of the Banyan Tree

In Sanatan Dharma, the banyan tree is revered as a symbol of immortality, stability, and longevity. Sacred texts teach that Lord Brahma resides in its roots, Lord Vishnu in its trunk, and Lord Shiva in its branches. Worshipping this tree is therefore believed to bestow the blessings of the trinity. The tree’s vast, enduring form represents unbroken marital bliss, a harmonious family life, and prosperity. This is why women wrap raw cotton thread around the banyan tree while praying for their husband’s long life. The fast embodies love, sacrifice, loyalty, and lifelong commitment. On this day, women observe a fast, often without water or by consuming only fruits, to seek their husband’s well-being. The observance draws inspiration from the extraordinary devotion, wisdom, and unwavering faith of Savitri, who through sheer determination reclaimed her husband Satyavan’s life from Yama, the god of death. This festival teaches that genuine faith, patience, and dedication can overcome even the most formidable challenges, like death itself.

Essential Items for the Ritual

Before beginning the puja, gather the following materials: vermilion (kumkum), turmeric powder, unbroken rice grains (akshata), fresh flowers, incense sticks, a ghee lamp, seasonal fruits, sweets, raw cotton thread, a pot filled with water, betel leaves, and a coconut.

Step-by-Step Puja Procedure

  • Wake up during Brahma Muhurta, take a bath, and make a firm resolve to observe the fast.
  • Prepare all the puja items as listed above.
  • Offer water to the roots of the banyan tree, followed by turmeric, vermilion, sandalwood paste, and flowers.
  • Walk around the tree seven, eleven, or twenty-one times while wrapping raw cotton thread around its trunk, each time praying for your husband’s long life and your family’s prosperity.
  • Listen attentively to the sacred story of Savitri and Satyavan, as the fast is considered incomplete without it.
  • Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Savitri.
  • Conclude by seeking blessings from elders in the family and then formally break your fast.

The Sacred Story of Vat Purnima

The narrative of Vat Purnima is rooted in the timeless love story of Savitri and Satyavan, a tale that remains a powerful example of marital devotion, faith, and the triumph of truth. In ancient times, King Ashwapati of the Madra kingdom was childless. Desiring an heir, he performed severe penance and conducted yajnas for many years. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess Savitri blessed him, promising the birth of a radiant daughter. In due course, a beautiful girl was born, and she was named Savitri after the goddess.

When Savitri came of age, her father gave her the freedom to choose her own husband. She ventured beyond her kingdom and entered a forested region, where she met Satyavan, the son of the blind and exiled King Dyumatsena. Though his family had lost their kingdom and lived humbly in the forest, Satyavan possessed remarkable virtue, simplicity, and brilliance. Savitri was deeply impressed and silently chose him as her life partner.

When Savitri informed her father of her choice, the sage Narada, who was present, revealed a grim prophecy: Satyavan was short-lived and would die exactly one year after his marriage. King Ashwapati was distraught and urged his daughter to select another groom. However, Savitri remained resolute, declaring that she had already given her heart to Satyavan and could not consider anyone else. Bound by her unwavering decision, the king consented, and the marriage was solemnized.

After the wedding, Savitri abandoned all royal comforts and went to live in the forest with her husband and his parents. She served her husband devotedly and cared for her in-laws with respect, but Narada’s words lingered in her mind. As the predicted day approached, Savitri began a strict fast three days prior, praying silently for her husband’s protection.

On the fateful day, Satyavan prepared to go into the forest to cut wood. Savitri insisted on accompanying him, despite his objections. As he worked, Satyavan suddenly complained of a severe headache and, exhausted, lay down with his head in Savitri’s lap under the shade of a banyan tree. Within moments, his life left his body.

At that instant, Savitri saw Yama, the god of death, arriving to claim her husband’s soul. Yama bound Satyavan’s spirit with his noose and began walking southward. Undeterred, Savitri followed him. Yama repeatedly told her to turn back, but she continued, driven by her steadfast devotion and determination.

Impressed by her wisdom, humility, and righteous words, Yama offered her any boon except the return of Satyavan’s life. Savitri cleverly asked for several boons one after another: the restoration of her blind father-in-law’s eyesight, the return of his lost kingdom, a hundred sons for her father, and a hundred sons for herself. Each time, Yama granted her wish, saying, “So be it.” He did not immediately realize that without Satyavan, Savitri could not bear those hundred sons.

When Yama finally understood his own oversight, he acknowledged Savitri’s intelligence and the depth of her love. He had no choice but to release Satyavan’s soul. Thus, through her extraordinary courage, sharp wit, and boundless love, Savitri brought her husband back from the clutches of death.
