Five Simple Holi Sweets to Make at Home

Holi is a festival of colors, joy, and sweetness. While elaborate feasts often take center stage, not everyone has hours to spend in the kitchen. Fortunately, you can prepare delicious treats with minimal time and basic ingredients. These five easy recipes use everyday items like milk, semolina, coconut, and chocolate. They capture traditional flavors while pleasing children and guests alike. This year, try these fuss-free sweets to fill your home with festive warmth and sweetness.

Gulab Jamun

Gulab jamun remains a beloved Holi classic, and a readymix makes it incredibly simple. Start by placing the mix in a bowl. Gradually add milk, kneading gently until you form a soft, smooth dough—neither too stiff nor sticky. Shape the dough into small, crack-free balls. Heat oil or ghee in a pan over medium flame, then reduce the heat and fry the balls until they turn golden brown. Meanwhile, prepare a sugar syrup by boiling sugar, water, and crushed cardamom. Once fried, soak the jamun in warm syrup for at least one to two hours. This resting time ensures they become juicy and flavorful throughout.

Coconut Laddoo

Coconut laddoos come together in minutes. In a pan, combine grated coconut with condensed milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly for four to five minutes until the mixture thickens. Add a pinch of cardamom powder for fragrance. When the blend starts leaving the sides of the pan, turn off the heat and let it cool slightly. Grease your palms with a little ghee and roll the mixture into small, round laddoos. For a decorative touch, press a sliver of pistachio or almond onto each one.

Sooji Halwa

Sooji halwa delivers comfort with minimal effort. Warm three to four tablespoons of ghee in a pan. Add semolina and roast it on low heat, stirring often, until it turns golden and releases a nutty aroma. Separately, bring water and sugar to a boil. Carefully pour this sweet liquid into the roasted semolina, stirring vigorously to prevent lumps. Continue cooking for five to seven minutes until the halwa thickens. Finish with a sprinkle of cardamom powder and a handful of chopped dry fruits. Serve warm for the best experience.

Chocolate Barfi

For a modern twist, chocolate barfi is a crowd-pleaser. Pour condensed milk into a non-stick pan and mix in cocoa powder. Cook on low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens and leaves the pan’s surface. Add a teaspoon of ghee and mix well. Transfer the blend to a greased tray and spread it evenly with a spatula. Scatter chopped nuts on top if you like. Allow the barfi to set for one to two hours, then cut it into squares or diamonds. This treat offers a rich, fudge-like texture that appeals to all ages.
