The Hidden Cost of Breast Cancer: A Toll on Health and Wealth

Breast cancer is not just a medical crisis; it is a financial one that can haunt survivors for years after treatment ends. A recent study from the University of Cambridge reveals that nearly one-third of women who have battled breast cancer continue to face serious economic hardships long after their recovery. For some, these costs never truly disappear. In India, the financial burden is escalating rapidly, placing immense strain on families and the healthcare system alike.

Breast Cancer: A Global Health Emergency

Breast cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. According to the World Health Organization, over 2.3 million new cases were reported in 2022 alone, resulting in approximately 670,000 deaths. In 157 out of 185 countries, it is the most common cancer affecting women. Projections suggest that by 2050, the number of new cases could surpass 3 million annually.

This disease develops when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably. If not detected early, it can spread to surrounding organs. Studies indicate that lifestyle factors such as rising obesity rates, physical inactivity, excessive red meat consumption, and alcohol or tobacco use are significant contributors to its increasing prevalence.

The Physical and Mental Toll

Medical reports confirm that breast cancer devastates not only physical health but also the mental and financial well-being of patients and their families. Treatment is expensive, and in countries like India, the economic impact is particularly severe. A recent report sheds light on this alarming reality.

The Hidden Financial Burden in the UK

A study from the United Kingdom highlights the hidden costs of breast cancer, even in a country with a free healthcare system. While the National Health Service covers diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy at no direct cost to residents, the financial strain does not end there. Research from the University of Cambridge found that women who have recovered from breast cancer still face hidden expenses of up to £12,000 (approximately 1.5 million rupees) each year.

Shockingly, about one-third of women battling this disease continue to experience financial problems long after treatment concludes. For some, these costs follow them for the rest of their lives.

Expert Insights on Economic Strain

Presenting these findings at the 15th European Breast Cancer Conference in Barcelona, clinical oncologist and commission chair Professor Charlotte Coles explained, “The reality is that the NHS is only ‘free’ at the point of treatment. We have discovered that there are many significant economic costs that are not covered.” Patients often face increased expenses after diagnosis while simultaneously becoming less able to work.

Professor Coles emphasized that some costs cannot even be measured in monetary terms. “They place enormous mental pressure on these women and their families,” she added.

Dr. Patrick Kirkegaard, an implementation scientist at the Cancer Research UK Convergence Science Centre, noted, “Women should never have to choose between their treatment and caring for their children. Unfortunately, when the hidden costs of treatment are not addressed with practical solutions, this is exactly what happens.”

The Escalating Crisis in India

Breast cancer is placing an ever-growing burden on India’s population. A study spanning 204 countries found that between 1990 and 2023, the number of breast cancer cases in India more than doubled. According to a report published in The Lancet Oncology by the Global Burden of Disease Study Breast Cancer Collaborators, the incidence rate in India rose from 13 per 100,000 women in 1990 to 29.4 per 100,000 women in 2023. Deaths from breast cancer in India have also increased by 74 percent.

In middle-income countries like India, the total economic burden of breast cancer was estimated at $8.13 billion in 2021. This figure is projected to reach $14 billion by 2030. This translates to a potential financial strain of several lakh crore rupees on the Indian population each year, solely due to breast cancer.

What Experts Say About the Indian Scenario

Dr. Sudeep Gupta, director of the Tata Memorial Centre, explained in a report that as development levels rise, certain types of cancer often become more common. India’s experience with breast cancer is a clear example of this trend.

A Simple Step to Reduce Risk

Health experts warn that the world is currently facing a widespread cancer risk that is expected to grow. To combat this threat, numerous studies recommend adopting simple habits such as walking for 30 minutes every day. They also advise abandoning dangerous habits like smoking and alcohol consumption as soon as possible. These small changes can significantly lower the risk of developing breast cancer and other related diseases.
