7 Effective Yoga Poses to Melt Away Stress and Restore Mental Calm

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a near-constant companion. Work pressure, digital overload, and poor sleep all take a toll on mental well-being. Yoga offers a natural, powerful antidote. It not only keeps the body fit but also quietens the mind, boosting positive hormones, improving sleep quality, and reducing anxiety and depression. Regular practice sharpens focus and enhances productivity. For best results, practise these asanas on an empty stomach in a calm, quiet space, ideally in the morning. Build your routine gradually.

Balasana (Child’s Pose)

This gentle pose instantly soothes both body and mind. To practise, kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, then fold forward, bringing your forehead to the ground. Rest your arms alongside your body or stretch them forward. Balasana calms the brain, relieves fatigue, and releases tension in the back and shoulders.

Shavasana (Corpse Pose)

Considered the ultimate relaxation posture, Shavasana involves lying flat on your back with arms relaxed at your sides, palms facing up. Let your legs fall open naturally. Close your eyes and consciously release every muscle. This pose significantly reduces mental stress, anxiety, and helps lower blood pressure.

Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

This pranayama technique balances the nervous system and brings clarity. Sit comfortably. Close your right nostril with your thumb, inhale slowly through the left nostril. Then close the left nostril with your ring finger, release the right, and exhale gently. Repeat on the other side. This practice calms an agitated mind, improves concentration, and reduces stress hormones.

Bhramari Pranayama (Bee Breath)

This breathing exercise is remarkably effective for immediate stress relief. Sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes, inhale deeply, and as you exhale, make a soft humming sound like a bee, keeping your mouth closed. Feel the vibration in your head and chest. Practising Bhramari quickly cools anger, eases tension, and quietens racing thoughts.

Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend)

This seated fold stretches the entire back body and calms the mind. Sit with legs extended straight in front. Inhale, lengthen your spine, then exhale as you fold forward from the hips, reaching for your feet or shins. Hold the pose gently. It relieves anxiety, fatigue, and mild depression while soothing the nervous system.

Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose)

This restorative inversion is a powerful stress buster. Lie on your back and extend your legs up against a wall, keeping your hips close to the wall. Rest your arms at your sides. Stay here for several minutes. It promotes deep relaxation, reduces anxiety, and helps regulate blood flow.

Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose)

This gentle backbend opens the chest and releases tension stored in the spine. Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Press into your feet to lift your hips toward the ceiling. Clasp your hands under your back. It alleviates stress, improves digestion, and calms the brain.
