A New COVID Variant Emerges: What You Need to Know About the ‘Cicada’ Strain

Nearly three years after the world ground to a halt, the coronavirus is making headlines again. A newly identified variant, officially designated BA.3.2 and nicknamed “Cicada” by scientists, is spreading across multiple countries, prompting fresh concerns among health officials and researchers.

First reported in late March, this variant has now been detected in at least 23 nations, including the United Kingdom. While the total number of confirmed infections remains unclear, experts are closely monitoring its trajectory. Early studies suggest that Cicada may spread more rapidly than previous strains and could potentially infect individuals who have built immunity through prior infection or vaccination.

Why Experts Are Paying Attention

What makes the Cicada variant particularly concerning is its ability to evade existing immune defenses. Officials have warned that it could soon become the dominant strain in the UK. In response, some specialists are calling for COVID vaccines to be included in pre-school immunization programs—a move that underscores the perceived threat to younger populations.

Professor Stephen Griffin, a viral oncologist at the University of Leeds, has criticized what he describes as a lack of foresight from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which previously recommended that childhood COVID vaccinations remain optional. He argues that this decision left a vulnerable gap in the population.

Current Spread and Symptoms

As of now, the Cicada variant has been reported in more than 20 countries. Its symptoms appear consistent with earlier iterations of the virus: fatigue, fever, body aches, and a sore throat. However, the speed at which it is spreading—and its genetic changes—have raised red flags.

According to preliminary genetic analysis, the spike protein of the Cicada variant has accumulated approximately 75 mutations. This significant number of changes makes it nearly unrecognizable to the immune system, even in people who have been vaccinated or previously infected.

Are We Heading Toward Another Wave?

Despite the alarm, not all experts believe the Cicada variant will trigger a catastrophic new wave. Professor Paul Hunter, a microbiologist at the University of East Anglia, points out that a higher transmission rate does not automatically translate into more severe illness or increased mortality.

“It’s not surprising that a new variant has emerged,” Hunter notes. “The real question is whether this particular strain poses a major public health threat.” He explains that while any fast-spreading variant will lead to more infections, the burden of serious disease does not necessarily follow the same curve.

Current observations suggest that the Cicada variant is spreading gradually rather than explosively. It appears to be following a pattern similar to last year’s strains—slowly increasing rather than surging. Still, every new infection provides the virus with another opportunity to mutate, and the risk of a more dangerous variant emerging remains.

Children Face Heightened Concerns

One of the most debated aspects of the Cicada variant is its potential impact on children. Experts are particularly worried about school-aged kids, who may have lower vaccination rates and less robust immune protection.

Professor Griffin emphasizes that the risks of reinfection and long COVID in children were not adequately considered during earlier waves. He warns that many people—especially children—remain unprotected by vaccines, and the Cicada variant’s immune-evading properties make this gap even more critical.

“The virus has already shown it can bypass vaccine-induced immunity,” Griffin says. “That makes the situation more dangerous for those who are not up to date with their shots.”

The Role of Declining Vaccination Rates

A major factor compounding the threat is the steady decline in COVID vaccination rates. While vaccines have dramatically reduced the number of severe cases and hospitalizations, their effectiveness wanes over time. Booster doses are essential to maintain protection, especially against newer variants.

Experts stress that vaccination remains the most powerful tool available. However, the protection it offers is most effective when the vaccine has been administered recently. With booster uptake falling globally, a significant portion of the population—including high-risk groups—may be left vulnerable.

Professor Griffin urges a renewed focus on vaccination campaigns, particularly for vulnerable groups and school-aged children. “We must remember that vaccines are the reason severe COVID cases are now far less common,” he says. “But that safety net only works if people are actually vaccinated.”

What This Means Going Forward

The emergence of the Cicada variant is a reminder that the pandemic is not over—it has simply entered a new phase. The virus continues to evolve, and each mutation brings the potential for new challenges. While the current data does not suggest an imminent catastrophe, the situation demands vigilance.

Key takeaways from the current situation include:

  • The Cicada variant (BA.3.2) has been detected in 23 countries and may become dominant in the UK.
  • It carries around 75 mutations in its spike protein, enabling it to evade existing immunity.
  • Symptoms remain similar to earlier strains, but the variant spreads faster.
  • Children and unvaccinated individuals are considered at higher risk.
  • Declining vaccination rates are a major concern, and booster shots are strongly recommended for vulnerable groups.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. For now, the advice remains consistent: stay informed, consider getting vaccinated or boosted if eligible, and remain aware of local health guidelines. The virus has not stopped changing—and neither should our approach to managing it.
