The Path to Lifelong Health: Insights from an Ayurvedic Master

In a world where chronic illness and stress have become commonplace, the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda offers a powerful alternative. At a recent dialogue in Lucknow, a renowned Ayurvedacharya shared transformative insights on how to achieve lasting health and vitality. His message was clear: by realigning our lifestyle with nature’s principles, we can dramatically reduce the risk of disease and live well into old age.

A Personal Journey from Despair to Healing

The Ayurvedacharya’s own story is a testament to the power of natural healing. In 1995, he was so ravaged by illness that he considered ending his life. His health troubles began in 1987 with jaundice, followed by eight years of relentless back pain, viral infections, and weight loss that brought him down to just 31 kilograms. On the verge of suicide, he lay down on a railway track. At that moment, a wandering monk appeared and redirected his path. This encounter became his turning point.

He turned to Ayurveda, and within three months, he regained 12 kilograms. This profound recovery inspired his lifelong mission: to share this ancient science and help others reclaim their health.

Three Pillars for a Healthier Nation

To improve public health on a large scale, the Ayurvedacharya emphasized three essential changes:

  • Teach prevention from childhood: Schools should educate children about how to avoid illness, not just treat it.
  • Crack down on adulteration: Strict monitoring and action against contaminated food products are critical.
  • Adopt a disciplined lifestyle: Proper diet and yoga can prevent most diseases when practiced consistently.

Timeless Ayurvedic Principles for a Century of Life

The Ayurvedacharya shared three foundational sutras from Ayurveda that can guide anyone toward a long, healthy life:

“Shuddho deha manashcha yasya, sah jivati varsha shatam”
A person whose body and mind are pure—free from toxins and mental disturbances—can live healthfully for one hundred years.

“Langhanam param aushadham”
Fasting is the supreme medicine. When you feel unwell, skipping a meal or two can give your digestive system the rest it needs to heal.

“Sarvesham roganam nidanam kupita malah”
The root cause of all diseases is the accumulation of toxins (ama) in the body. When the doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha—become imbalanced and polluted, illness follows. Panchakarma therapies are designed to remove these toxins.

He stressed that if India adopted the simple habit of fasting for 2–3 days at the onset of any illness, even serious conditions like tumors, heart disease, and growths would be kept at bay.

Self-Checks for Kidney, Liver, and Heart Health

One of the most practical parts of his talk was teaching the audience how to monitor their own vital organs at home, without waiting for lab reports to show alarming numbers.

How to Check Your Kidneys

  • Collect all your urine from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM in one bottle.
  • Collect all your urine from 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM the next morning in a separate bottle.
  • If the nighttime urine volume is about one-third to one-fourth of the daytime volume, your kidneys are functioning well.

He noted that kidney reports often remain normal until 70% of organ function is lost, making this simple test invaluable.

How to Check Your Liver

  • If you go to bed around 10:00–11:00 PM but find yourself waking up between 2:30–3:00 AM regularly, this could signal liver stress.
  • Like the kidneys, the liver can be 80–85% damaged before standard tests show clear abnormalities.

How to Check Your Heart

  • Measure your blood pressure in the morning between 9:00–10:00 AM.
  • Measure it again at night between 9:00–10:00 PM.
  • If your morning reading is 10–15% higher than your evening reading, your heart is healthy and your risk of heart attack is low.

Simple Dietary Wisdom for Daily Life

The Ayurvedacharya urged that children should be taught from school age what to eat and what to avoid, according to the seasons. He highlighted a common mistake: mixing fruit with milk.

Ayurveda clearly states that fruit and milk should not be consumed together, as this combination causes inflammation. Yet mango shakes and banana shakes are wildly popular. He advised that if you want to enjoy these drinks, use almond milk or coconut milk instead of cow or buffalo milk.

The Truth About Gym Culture

While exercise is beneficial, the Ayurvedacharya warned strongly against the use of protein powders and supplements often promoted in gyms. He explained that these products can cause severe damage to the kidneys and bones. Building a strong body through natural food and consistent practice is far safer and more sustainable than relying on synthetic powders.

His message was simple: health is not complicated. It requires awareness, discipline, and a return to nature’s rhythms. By adopting these ancient principles, anyone can reduce their risk of disease and enjoy a vibrant, long life.
