Eid-ul-Adha 2026 in India: When Will Bakrid Be Celebrated?

Eid-ul-Adha, commonly known as Bakrid or Bakra Eid, stands as one of the most sacred festivals in Islam. This occasion embodies the spirit of sacrifice, devotion, and humanity, serving as a powerful reminder of submission to the Almighty. Every year, the Muslim community eagerly awaits this festival, not only for its religious significance but also for the messages of brotherhood, charity, and compassion it carries.

In 2026, the exact date of Bakrid in India remains a topic of anticipation. Since the Islamic calendar follows lunar cycles, the festival’s timing hinges on the sighting of the crescent moon. According to current estimates, Eid-ul-Adha is likely to fall on either May 27 or May 28, 2026. The final confirmation, however, will only come after the moon is visibly spotted, which determines the start of the month of Zil-Hijjah.

The Religious Significance of Bakrid

Eid-ul-Adha commemorates the profound story of Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering faith. As recounted in Islamic tradition, Prophet Ibrahim was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son as an act of obedience. Demonstrating immense devotion, he prepared to carry out the divine order. In recognition of his sincerity and submission, Allah replaced his son with a ram at the moment of sacrifice. This powerful narrative has since established the tradition of animal sacrifice during the festival.

Beyond the ritual itself, Bakrid symbolizes the willingness to give up one’s ego, greed, and negative traits. It is a festival that teaches the value of selflessness and reminds believers that true faith is demonstrated through actions, not just words. This is why Eid-ul-Adha is often described as a celebration of humanity and sacrifice.

How the Date Is Determined

The Islamic calendar is entirely lunar-based, meaning each month begins with the sighting of the new moon. For Bakrid, the date is set after the crescent moon of Zil-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Islamic year, is observed. In countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the moon sighting can sometimes differ from that in Saudi Arabia, leading to variations in the celebration date across regions. Local moon sighting committees typically make the official announcement after sunset on the 29th day of the preceding month.

What Happens on Bakrid?

The day of Eid-ul-Adha begins with a special prayer service held in mosques and open grounds. Following the prayers, the ritual of Qurbani (sacrifice) is performed. Families who can afford it sacrifice an animal—commonly a goat, sheep, cow, or camel—and divide the meat into three portions: one for the poor and needy, one for relatives and friends, and one for their own household. This practice reinforces the values of equality, generosity, and community bonding.

After the sacrifice, families and friends exchange warm greetings of “Eid Mubarak” and gather for festive meals. It is a time of joy, where homes are filled with laughter, and delicious dishes are shared. Visiting relatives, giving gifts, and donating to charity are also integral parts of the celebration.

Why Bakrid Holds a Special Place

Bakrid is far more than a religious obligation; it is a profound lesson in sacrifice and humanity. The festival encourages individuals to reflect on their own lives and consider what they are willing to give up for the greater good. It fosters a sense of discipline, empathy, and gratitude. Across the globe, Muslims celebrate this occasion with deep reverence and enthusiasm, reaffirming their faith and strengthening their ties with the community.

In essence, Eid-ul-Adha is a timeless reminder that the essence of devotion lies not in ritual alone, but in the purity of intention and the willingness to serve others. As the world waits for the moon to signal the arrival of this blessed day, the spirit of Bakrid continues to inspire millions to embrace compassion, charity, and unity.
