The Lesson Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi Learned Too Late

At the Amar Ujala Samwad 2026 event in Lucknow, the atmosphere was rich with stories of taste, struggle, and success. Celebrity chef Harpal Singh Sokhi took the stage in his signature style, sharing candid insights about life, education, and the culinary world. His words resonated deeply with the young audience, delivering a powerful message: raw talent alone is not enough. The right education, a willingness to innovate, and a deeper understanding of the world are all essential ingredients for lasting success.

Why Education Matters, Even for a Chef

When asked how important formal education is for a chef, Sokhi was emphatic. He believes every person, regardless of their profession, must be educated. It is not about memorizing facts; it is about developing the judgment to distinguish right from wrong, and to navigate the complexities of life and business.

Reflecting on his own days studying hotel management, Sokhi admitted that many subjects felt pointless at the time. He questioned the need to study language, business principles, or other unrelated topics just to learn how to cook. “I used to think, why do I need to learn this? I just want to make food,” he recalled. But with years of experience running his own ventures, he now understands the value of every single lesson. He confessed that if he had taken those subjects more seriously—especially law and accounting—he would have become a much better entrepreneur.

Making Learning Fun, Not a Burden

Sokhi also criticized the current education system for making learning feel like a heavy load rather than an exciting journey. As a science student, he felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of subjects in hotel management. Today, as a business owner, he sees the direct link between those forgotten lessons and his ability to manage finances and contracts. “If I had paid more attention to law and accounting, I would have understood my business numbers much better,” he said.

He stressed that education should be engaging. “The more fun learning is, the longer it stays in your mind,” Sokhi explained. He argued that when students lose interest, it is often because the system fails to make the material relevant or enjoyable.

The Power of Innovation in Food

On the topic of experimental and fusion cuisine, Sokhi was clear: trying new things is never a crime. He pointed out that no one can predict which new flavor combination will become the next big hit. If a new food pairing tastes good and is also healthy, it deserves to be celebrated.

He observed that today’s diners are always craving new experiences. They want to eat something they have never tasted before. This constant desire for novelty is what drives the endless creativity in the food industry. According to Sokhi, the most innovative people in the culinary world are often street food vendors. Their willingness to experiment with ingredients and techniques is what gives birth to entirely new dishes and flavors.

Stagnation is Not an Option

Sokhi warned that without constant innovation, it is impossible to move forward. He believes that new experiments are what keep the world of food exciting and rich. “If you stop innovating, you stop growing,” he said. For him, the kitchen is a laboratory, and every meal is a chance to discover something new. His message to aspiring chefs and young entrepreneurs was simple: embrace curiosity, respect the lessons you are taught today, and never be afraid to create something that has never been done before.
