Why Blood Pressure Drops in Summer and How to Manage It

As summer temperatures soar, with the Delhi-NCR region recently recording highs above 45 degrees Celsius, the scorching sun and blistering heat have become a serious concern. Doctors warn that rising heat significantly increases the risk of heatstroke. According to recent reports, hospitals in the area are currently treating at least two patients for heatstroke, while outpatient departments are seeing a steady stream of individuals suffering from high fever, headaches, dizziness, and heat-related skin issues.

Health experts emphasize that everyone should take precautions against heatwaves. The climbing mercury can trigger a range of health problems, and one particularly common issue during this season is low blood pressure. While high blood pressure is widely recognized as dangerous, a sudden drop in blood pressure can be equally serious, leading to complications if ignored. So, what should you do if the summer heat causes your blood pressure to fall? Understanding the causes and knowing the right steps can make all the difference.

The Link Between Summer Heat and Low Blood Pressure

Dr. Tushar Sharma, an intensive care specialist, explains that summer does not just bring sweat, fatigue, and dizziness—it also directly affects your blood pressure. When your body temperature rises, your blood vessels expand (vasodilation) in an effort to cool you down. This natural response can cause blood pressure to drop suddenly.

As a result, many people experience sudden dizziness, weakness, darkening of vision, or even fainting. Additionally, excessive sweating during hot weather leads to the loss of essential fluids and electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. This depletion further increases the risk of hypotension (low blood pressure).

What Causes Low Blood Pressure in Summer?

Dehydration is extremely common in summer, but dismissing it as a minor issue can be dangerous. Continuous perspiration depletes vital minerals like sodium and potassium, which are crucial for maintaining stable blood pressure. A deficiency in these minerals often leads to weakness and a drop in pressure readings.

If blood pressure remains consistently low and does not improve, it can negatively impact vital organs, including the brain, heart, and kidneys. Recognizing the signs early and taking prompt action is essential to avoid long-term health risks.

Immediate Steps to Take When Blood Pressure Drops

If you or someone around you experiences a sudden drop in blood pressure, several simple measures can provide quick relief.

  • Monitor symptoms first: Pay attention to warning signs such as dizziness, weakness, or feeling faint.
  • Check blood pressure: If the reading falls below 90/60 mmHg, take action immediately.
  • Provide a quick drink: Mix a pinch or two of salt in a glass of lemon water and have the person drink it. This helps restore sodium levels and raises blood pressure.
  • Adjust their position: Lay the person down and elevate their legs slightly above heart level. This encourages blood flow toward the brain and often brings rapid relief.
  • Replenish fluids: Give an oral rehydration solution (ORS) to restore both water and electrolyte balance.

However, individuals with pre-existing heart or kidney conditions should consult a doctor before increasing salt intake, as excessive sodium can be harmful for them.

What to Avoid When Blood Pressure Is Low

Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing the right actions. If someone has low blood pressure, avoid the following:

  • Do not let them stand or walk suddenly: This can cause fainting and lead to falls or injuries.
  • Loosen tight clothing: Tight clothes can restrict circulation and worsen discomfort. Keep the person in a relaxed, comfortable position.
  • Avoid prolonged fasting: Skipping meals for long hours can cause blood sugar levels to drop, which may further lower blood pressure. Opt for light, nutritious meals instead.
  • Seek medical help if needed: If the person loses consciousness or begins breathing rapidly, get emergency medical assistance immediately.

Common Questions About Low Blood Pressure in Summer

Many people wonder whether drinking coffee is safe during a low blood pressure episode. Caffeine can temporarily raise blood pressure in some individuals, but it may also cause dehydration. It is best to prioritize water, electrolyte drinks, or salt-based solutions first and consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

Preventive Tips for Staying Healthy in the Heat

Prevention is always better than cure. To keep your blood pressure stable during the summer months:

  • Stay well-hydrated throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak hours.
  • Wear light, breathable clothing and a hat when outdoors.
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, as both can contribute to dehydration.
  • Eat small, frequent meals rich in fruits, vegetables, and electrolytes.

By understanding how summer heat affects your body and taking these simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of low blood pressure and enjoy a safer, healthier season.
