Why Some Destinations Become Risky During the Monsoon

The monsoon season paints the landscape in vivid shades of green, brings refreshing breezes, and creates a dreamy atmosphere that many travelers find irresistible. It’s no surprise that people love to plan getaways during this time. However, the same rains that make the scenery so enchanting can also turn a holiday into a hazardous experience. Persistent downpours, sudden landslides, flash floods, slippery roads, and raging water currents can quickly transform popular tourist spots into danger zones.

While destinations like Lonavala or Pachmarhi are often recommended for their monsoon charm, not every beautiful location is safe to visit during this season. Roads leading to certain areas may be closed without warning, river and waterfall levels can rise abruptly, and local authorities might impose temporary entry bans for safety reasons. This makes it essential to choose your travel destination wisely during the rainy months. Before setting out, always check weather forecasts, road conditions, official advisories, and disaster alerts. Below are the types of places where caution is crucial—or which you should avoid altogether during the monsoon.

Mountain Regions Prone to Landslides

Some of the most revered and scenic hill stations become high-risk zones when the monsoon arrives. The Himalayan region, in particular, faces serious challenges during heavy rainfall.

  • Char Dham sites (Badrinath, Kedarnath): These sacred pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand are especially vulnerable. Continuous rain loosens the soil, increasing the likelihood of rockslides and landslides. Roads can become blocked or damaged, and travelers often face long hours of traffic jams or complete route closures.
  • General hill station risks: In any mountainous area, heavy precipitation can cause mud to become unstable, leading to falling boulders and debris. This not only endangers lives but also makes evacuation difficult if an emergency occurs.

Riverbanks, Waterfalls, and Flood-Prone Zones

Areas near rivers and waterfalls are particularly dangerous during the monsoon due to rapidly rising water levels. Popular spots can turn treacherous without warning.

  • Mumbai: The city frequently experiences severe waterlogging in low-lying areas and on major roads during heavy rains. This disrupts travel and can lead to dangerous situations for those caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • Kaziranga National Park (Assam): During the monsoon, large portions of this famous park become submerged due to river flooding. Most safari routes are closed, and the area is best avoided entirely.
  • Waterfall visits: While waterfalls look spectacular in the rain, the currents become unpredictable and powerful. Slippery rocks and sudden surges pose a real threat, especially for those trying to take photos or selfies near the water’s edge.

Coastal Areas During Storm Season

The monsoon brings rough seas and high winds to coastal regions, making beach holidays far less relaxing and far more perilous.

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands: These islands are stunning, but the monsoon season brings dangerous sea conditions. Ferry services are frequently cancelled, and water sports become extremely risky due to strong currents and waves.
  • Odisha coastline: This region is particularly susceptible to cyclonic storms during the monsoon. Rising sea levels and gusty winds make coastal travel unpredictable and hazardous. It is wise to postpone any trip to these areas until the weather stabilizes.

Dense Forests and Remote Off-Road Trails

Adventure seekers might be tempted to explore jungles or go trekking during the monsoon, but these activities come with significant risks that are often underestimated.

  • Slippery and treacherous paths: Heavy rain turns forest trails into muddy, slick surfaces where it’s easy to lose your footing. This increases the chance of injuries from falls.
  • Leeches and insects: The wet environment causes a surge in leeches, mosquitoes, and other pests, making the experience uncomfortable and raising the risk of infections.
  • Poor connectivity: Mobile network coverage is often weak or non-existent in dense forests. If you lose your way or have an accident, calling for help can be nearly impossible.
  • Disorientation: With trails obscured by fog, rain, and overgrown vegetation, even experienced trekkers can easily become lost. Rescue operations are also delayed in such conditions.
