Beyond the Temple: Exploring Puri’s Hidden Gems During the Rath Yatra

The world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, set to take place on July 16, 2026, in Puri, Odisha, is one of the most significant religious events on the global calendar. Each year, millions of devotees flock to this coastal town to seek blessings from Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. Pilgrims arrive not only from across India but from every corner of the world, drawn by the spiritual energy of the grand chariot festival and the sacred Jagannath Temple.

Yet Puri offers far more than a single temple visit. This city is a treasure trove of natural beauty, historic landmarks, and vibrant cultural traditions. From serene beaches and ancient monuments to artisan villages and Asia’s largest saltwater lagoon, the region surrounding the Jagannath Temple is packed with unforgettable experiences. If you are planning a trip for the Rath Yatra, do not limit yourself to just the temple darshan. Here are eight remarkable places that deserve a spot on your itinerary.

Golden Beach

Located just 1.5 to 2 kilometers from the Jagannath Temple, Puri’s Golden Beach is a perfect spot for relaxation and scenic beauty. You can easily reach it by auto-rickshaw or cycle rickshaw. The beach is known for its clean, golden sands and gentle waves, making it a favorite among visitors. Whether you prefer a quiet morning walk or watching the sun dip below the horizon, the sunrise and sunset views here are truly spectacular. The tranquil atmosphere offers a welcome contrast to the bustling temple crowds.

Konark Sun Temple

About 35 to 36 kilometers from Puri, the Konark Sun Temple is a masterpiece of ancient architecture, astronomy, and engineering. A drive along the scenic Marine Drive Road takes you straight to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is designed in the shape of a colossal chariot, pulled by seven powerful horses, and built so that the first rays of the sun directly illuminate the sanctum sanctorum. The intricate stone carvings and the sheer scale of the structure leave every visitor in awe. This is not just a temple—it is a testament to the brilliance of Odisha’s medieval craftsmen.

Chilika Lake

Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon and a stunning natural wonder, Chilika Lake is a must-visit for nature lovers. Located roughly an hour’s drive from Puri, this vast lake is the only place in India where you can spot the Irrawaddy dolphin in its natural habitat. Boating through the calm waters, you can also visit the Kalijai Mata Temple, perched on a small island in the middle of the lake. The area is a paradise for birdwatchers, especially during the winter months when migratory birds arrive in flocks. Whether you are dolphin-spotting or simply enjoying the serene landscape, Chilika Lake offers a refreshing escape.

Gundicha Temple

Known as the home of Lord Jagannath’s aunt, the Gundicha Temple holds special significance during the Rath Yatra. It sits about 3 kilometers from the main Jagannath Temple and serves as the resting place for the deities during the festival. After the grand chariot procession, the gods stay here for several days before their return journey. The temple itself is less crowded than the main shrine, allowing for a more peaceful darshan. Its historical and religious importance makes it an essential stop for any pilgrim.

Raghurajpur Heritage Village

Just 14 kilometers from Puri city, Raghurajpur is a living gallery of Odisha’s traditional arts and crafts. Declared Odisha’s first heritage village in 2000, and honored as India’s best tourism village in 2023, this hamlet is home to skilled artisans in every household. Here, you can watch artists create intricate Pattachitra paintings, palm-leaf engravings, and even witness Odissi dance performances. Every home feels like a studio, and the vibrant colors and creativity are contagious. A walk through Raghurajpur offers a genuine glimpse into the soul of Odia culture.

Loknath Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Loknath Temple is another revered site near Puri. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples in the region and holds a special place in local folklore. The temple’s architecture reflects the traditional Kalinga style, and the peaceful courtyard provides a quiet space for meditation. Many visitors combine a trip here with their visit to the Jagannath Temple, as it lies conveniently close by. The spiritual ambiance and the absence of large crowds make it a serene alternative for those seeking a quieter devotional experience.

Swargadwar Beach

Swargadwar, meaning “Gateway to Heaven,” is a beach of deep spiritual significance. According to Hindu tradition, cremation at this site ensures liberation for the soul. Beyond its religious importance, the beach itself is beautiful and less commercialized than Golden Beach. It offers a place for quiet reflection, long walks, and watching local fishermen at work. The waves here are stronger, making it popular among those who enjoy the raw power of the ocean. It is a place where the sacred and the natural blend seamlessly.

Markandeya Tank

This ancient water tank, named after the sage Markandeya, is a tranquil spot located within Puri town. Surrounded by small shrines and lush greenery, it is believed that taking a dip in its holy waters cleanses one of sins. The tank is particularly busy during festivals, but on regular days it offers a calm retreat. Locals often come here to relax, and the gentle atmosphere makes it a pleasant place to sit and observe daily life in Puri. It is a hidden gem that many tourists overlook.
