Massive Instagram Data Breach Exposes 17.5 Million Users
A significant cybersecurity alert has been issued for Instagram users worldwide. A recent report from a leading cybersecurity firm has revealed that the personal data of approximately 17.5 million Instagram accounts has been compromised. This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of user information on the platform.
The stolen dataset was reportedly published on a known cybercrime forum, drastically increasing the risk of targeted phishing campaigns and other malicious attacks. Security experts believe the breach was orchestrated by a hacker operating under the alias Solonic.
How the Breach Occurred
According to the cybersecurity firm’s findings, large JSON and TXT files containing the stolen data were uploaded to the dark web on January 7, 2026. The breach is suspected to have originated from a vulnerability in Instagram’s Application Programming Interface (API) that existed in 2024. Cybercriminals exploited this flaw to extract sensitive information from millions of accounts.
What Information Was Stolen?
While there is some relief that passwords were not included in the leak, the exposed data is still highly valuable to criminals. The compromised dataset includes:
- Usernames
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Physical addresses
Security experts warn that even without passwords, this information is sufficient for hackers to carry out sophisticated identity theft schemes. With email addresses and phone numbers, attackers can launch highly targeted phishing attacks. They may impersonate representatives from Instagram or its parent company, sending fake messages or links that request password resets or account verification.
