A New Level of Control Over Your Instagram Circle

Instagram is developing a feature that could significantly shift how users manage their social boundaries on the platform. Currently in its early stages, this upcoming update would allow individuals to voluntarily remove themselves from someone else’s “Close Friends” list—a capability that has been notably absent since the feature’s launch.

Meta has confirmed that this option is being explored, though it has not yet entered public testing. For many, this change could resolve a long-standing privacy concern: being added to a private list without consent and having no way to exit.

What the “Close Friends” Update Would Do

Introduced in 2018, the Close Friends feature lets users share Stories, Reels, and posts with a select group. Until now, once added, there was no way for a person to leave that list on their own terms. According to findings from reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, a prototype suggests Instagram will soon offer a direct option to opt out of any Close Friends list.

When a user chooses to leave, Instagram would display a warning: they will no longer see that person’s exclusive content unless they are added again. While some may feel awkward about leaving, experts note that this control is a relief for users who do not wish to view private content involuntarily or feel pressured to remain in a circle they never agreed to join.

Competitive Landscape and Broader Changes

This move aligns Instagram more closely with rival Snapchat, which already allows users to remove themselves from private stories. Beyond this single feature, Meta is exploring additional subscription-based services. Paluzzi’s research indicates that a “premium subscription” tier is in development, potentially offering benefits such as:

  • Unlimited audience list creation
  • The ability to see which followers do not follow back
  • Anonymous story viewing—without the other person knowing

These additions would give users more granular control over their interactions and visibility, catering to those who want deeper insights or more flexibility in how they engage.

Meta’s Vision for User Autonomy

Meta has stated that these changes are part of a broader effort to empower users in deciding how and with whom they connect. The company is also testing various subscription bundles across its apps—Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram—aiming to keep the core experience free while offering optional premium features for those who want them.

This direction suggests a future where social media platforms balance free access with paid enhancements, giving users the choice to customize their experience without compromising basic functionality. For now, the Close Friends opt-out feature remains under development, but it signals a shift toward greater user agency in digital social spaces.
