Pakistan took another step forward in its space ambitions this week with the successful launch of its second indigenous Earth observation satellite, EO-2. The satellite lifted off from China’s Yangjiang Sea Launch Center on Thursday, a mission developed by Pakistan’s national space agency, SUPARCO (Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission). While the launch marks a technical milestone for Pakistan, it has also sparked discussions about whether this new capability could heighten surveillance concerns for neighboring India.
What Is the EO-2 Satellite?
The EO-2 is an electro-optical satellite designed primarily for Earth observation. Its core purpose is to capture and relay high-resolution images of the planet’s surface back to ground stations in Pakistan. This satellite is intended to strengthen Pakistan’s imaging capabilities, offering sharper and more detailed visuals than its predecessor. The first satellite in this series, EO-1, was launched from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. How Does SUPARCO Compare to ISRO?
The gap between Pakistan’s space capabilities and India’s is substantial. ISRO’s Earth observation fleet includes multiple satellites with superior resolution, broader coverage, and more advanced data processing systems. India also has a well-established track record of launching and operating complex space missions, including interplanetary probes. SUPARCO, while making steady progress, operates on a much smaller scale and with fewer resources. The EO-2 launch is a positive step for Pakistan, but it does not alter the strategic balance in space technology between the two nations.
