Making UPI Payments Without an Internet Connection
Digital payments have transformed the way people handle everyday transactions. From buying groceries and recharging mobile phones to settling utility bills, most activities now rely on apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and BHIM. These tools have made sending and receiving money incredibly convenient. However, there are times when internet access is unavailable—whether due to poor connectivity, exhausted mobile data, or a lack of Wi-Fi. In such moments, making a payment can become a challenge, especially if you do not have cash on hand. Recognizing this issue, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced an offline UPI payment service. Launched in 2022, this feature is designed to assist individuals living in areas with weak network signals or those who occasionally face internet disruptions. With this service, you can transfer money directly from your phone without needing an active internet connection.
Step-by-Step Guide to Offline UPI Payments
Using the offline UPI feature is straightforward. By dialing a simple USSD code, you can complete transactions securely. Follow these steps to send money without internet:
Step 1: Dial the USSD Code
Open your phone’s dialer and type *99#. Press the call button to initiate the service.
Step 2: Access the Welcome Screen
After dialing, a message reading “Welcome to *99#” will appear on your screen. Tap or select “OK” to proceed.
Step 3: Choose the Send Money Option
You will now see a list of available options. Look for and select the “Send Money” feature from the menu.
Step 4: Select the Mobile Number Option
Next, choose the option to enter a mobile number. This will allow you to specify the recipient.
Step 5: Enter the Recipient’s Mobile Number
Type in the mobile number of the person you wish to send money to. Ensure the number is correct to avoid errors.
Step 6: Confirm the Recipient’s Name
Once you enter the number, the system will display the recipient’s name on the screen. Verify that the name matches the intended person and confirm.
Step 7: Enter the Amount and UPI PIN
Now, input the amount you want to transfer. After that, type in your UPI PIN to authorize the transaction. Your payment will be processed successfully within moments.
Essential Requirements for Offline UPI Payments
Before you can use the offline UPI service, certain conditions must be met. These prerequisites ensure a smooth and secure transaction:
- Your mobile number must be linked to your bank account.
- Your bank account should be registered with UPI.
- You need to have a UPI PIN already set up for your account.
- You must dial *99# from the same mobile number that is linked to your bank account.
Why Offline UPI Service Matters
The offline UPI feature is particularly valuable in situations where internet connectivity is unreliable or absent. It enables you to send money quickly and securely without relying on mobile data or Wi-Fi. This service is especially beneficial for people living in rural areas or regions with poor network coverage. In the era of Digital India, it ensures that essential payments are never delayed simply because of a lack of internet access. Whether you are in a remote village or facing a temporary network outage, this tool keeps your financial transactions moving smoothly.
