India Leads Global AI App Downloads, Yet Revenue Remains Elusive
India has emerged as the world’s largest market for generative AI app downloads, capturing nearly 20% of all global installations in 2025. This surge reflects a massive 207% year-over-year increase, according to a report from market research firm Sensor Tower. Despite this explosive growth, the country accounts for only about 1% of global in-app purchase revenue, highlighting a stark disconnect between user adoption and monetization.
One in Five AI Apps Installed in India
The data reveals that for every five generative AI apps downloaded worldwide, one lands on an Indian device. This places India ahead of the United States in download volume. However, the revenue picture tells a different story. AI companies are struggling to convert this vast user base into sustainable income. In 2025, India contributed just 1% to the total global in-app spending on generative AI applications.
Downloads Skyrocket, Spending Stalls
While downloads surged by as much as 320% in certain periods, revenue growth remained sluggish. In November 2025, in-app purchases dropped by 22%, followed by a further 18% decline in December. Users are clearly eager to try AI tools, but they are reluctant to pay for them. This pattern poses a significant challenge for companies aiming to turn high engagement into profitability.
Free Offers Fuel the Download Boom
A key driver behind the download explosion has been the proliferation of free offers and trial models. Major AI platforms have aggressively courted Indian users with no-cost access. Notable examples include:
- DeepSeek
- Grok
- Meta AI
- Google (offering its AI Pro plan free for one year)
- Perplexity AI (partnering with Airtel to provide a free Pro plan)
- OpenAI (offering ChatGPT Go free for a limited period)
The impact of these freebies was immediate. After ChatGPT Go launched with free access in November, OpenAI’s revenue from India dropped by 33%. December saw an additional 32% decline. Despite this, OpenAI still dominates the Indian market, holding over 60% of all generative AI app in-app revenue in the country.
India’s Rapidly Growing AI User Base
The enthusiasm for AI in India is undeniable. At a recent India AI Impact Summit, Sam Altman revealed that ChatGPT alone has over 100 million weekly active users in the country. This statistic underscores how quickly Indians are adopting new technologies. The popularity of AI apps and chatbots continues to climb, driven by curiosity and the availability of free tools.
What This Means for the Industry
India has firmly established itself as the global leader in generative AI app downloads. The user base is enormous and growing rapidly, yet revenue generation remains a major hurdle. The coming years will test whether companies can move beyond free models and successfully convert this engaged audience into paying customers. The challenge lies in balancing user acquisition with long-term monetization strategies that work in a price-sensitive market.
