WhatsApp Introduces Status Ads and Promoted Channels

Significant changes are coming to one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms. The Meta-owned app has announced the global rollout of status advertisements and promoted channels, marking a shift in how users encounter commercial content. Additionally, a new security regulation will take effect in India starting March 1, specifically affecting those who access WhatsApp through their web browser. Understanding these updates is essential for anyone who relies on the platform daily.

What Are Status Ads and How Will They Appear?

Users will soon notice advertisements appearing alongside the status updates and channels they typically view. These ads will reside within the Updates tab, clearly labeled to distinguish them from organic content shared by friends or followed channels. Just like any standard status, you can swipe past these advertisements without interruption. If a particular brand’s promotion becomes repetitive or unwanted, the option to block or hide that specific advertiser is available. WhatsApp frames this move as a way to help users discover new brands and relevant content, rather than as a disruption to the messaging experience.

Privacy Concerns Addressed

Whenever advertising enters a private messaging space, questions about data security naturally arise. WhatsApp has emphasized that personal chats, audio and video calls, and user-generated statuses remain fully protected by end-to-end encryption. This means neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access the content of your private conversations. Your personal messages will not be used to determine which advertisements you see. In select countries, users may also have the option to pay for an ad-free version of the app, providing an alternative for those who prefer an uninterrupted experience.

New Group Chat History Feature

Beyond advertising, WhatsApp has introduced a practical tool for group conversations. When someone joins an existing group, they often miss the context of earlier discussions. The new group chat history feature allows administrators or existing members to share between 25 and 100 previous messages with the newcomer. This helps new participants quickly understand the flow of conversation without needing to scroll through endless archives or ask repeated questions.

India’s New Auto-Logout Rule for WhatsApp Web Users

A major regulatory change is arriving for Indian users who rely on WhatsApp Web via office or personal laptops. Starting March 1, the platform will automatically log out web users every six hours. After this period, you will need to scan the QR code using your phone to re-establish the connection. This rule stems from updated security directives issued by the Indian government, which mandated implementation by February 28, 2026. The goal is to strengthen SIM-based account verification and reduce the risk of unauthorized access through inactive sessions. No extensions or delays have been granted for this requirement.

What This Means for Daily Users

For those who keep WhatsApp Web open throughout the workday, this change introduces a small but recurring step. Every six hours, the session will expire, requiring a fresh login from your mobile device. While this may seem inconvenient, it is designed to protect accounts if a device is lost, stolen, or left unattended. The auto-logout applies only to the web version and does not affect the mobile app experience. Users should plan for brief interruptions and ensure their phone is nearby when working on a desktop or laptop.

  • Status ads will appear in the Updates tab with clear labeling.
  • Personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted.
  • Group chat history sharing allows 25 to 100 prior messages for new members.
  • WhatsApp Web in India will auto-logout every six hours from March 1.
  • Re-login requires scanning a QR code with the mobile app.

These updates reflect WhatsApp’s balancing act between monetization, user privacy, and regulatory compliance. While status ads introduce a new revenue stream, the company insists that encryption and personal data remain untouched. Meanwhile, the Indian government’s security mandate tightens control over web-based access, prioritizing account safety over uninterrupted convenience. As the platform evolves, users can expect further refinements to how they interact with both content and security features.
