UMANG App Introduces ‘Mera Ration’ Feature for Streamlined Access

The Indian government continues its push toward digital convenience with the latest update to the UMANG app. A new feature called ‘Mera Ration’ has been added, allowing ration card holders to check their quota, locate nearby fair price shops, and review their transaction history directly from their smartphones. This enhancement is particularly significant for migrant workers, as it strengthens the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ initiative by making essential services more accessible.

What the ‘Mera Ration’ Service Offers

This newly integrated feature on the UMANG platform provides users with a comprehensive set of tools to manage their ration-related needs remotely. Instead of visiting government offices or carrying physical documents, individuals can now access everything from their mobile device. Key functionalities include locating the nearest government-run ration shop using GPS, checking the exact quantity of wheat, rice, or other grains allocated under their quota, and viewing a complete history of past transactions. Simply entering the ration card number—or Aadhaar details if the card number is unavailable—unlocks all this information instantly.

How to Use the Feature

Getting started with ‘Mera Ration’ is straightforward and requires only a few steps:

  • Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Open the app and register using your mobile phone number.
  • Set a four-digit MPIN to secure your account.
  • After logging in, type ‘Mera Ration’ into the search bar on the home screen.
  • Select the relevant service, enter your ration card number, and view your details. Alternatively, Aadhaar details can also be used for verification.

Key Benefits for Users

The introduction of this feature brings several practical advantages, especially for those who frequently relocate for work. Under the ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ scheme, migrant laborers can now verify which shop in their new location will serve them, eliminating confusion and delays. Beyond convenience, the feature also enhances transparency in the public distribution system. Shopkeepers often cite stock shortages or server issues as reasons for denying rations, but users can now independently check available stock through the app. To curb fraud, biometric authentication via fingerprint is required when collecting rations, and a confirmation SMS is sent to the registered mobile number immediately after the transaction. This ensures that supplies reach the intended beneficiaries without diversion.

Strengthening Digital Governance

This update reflects a broader effort to digitize and simplify government services. By putting critical information directly into citizens’ hands, the ‘Mera Ration’ feature reduces dependence on intermediaries and minimizes bureaucratic hurdles. For families relying on subsidized food grains, this means less time spent in queues and more confidence in the fairness of the distribution process. The app’s user-friendly design ensures that even those with limited digital literacy can navigate it easily, making it a practical tool for millions across the country.

Additional Capabilities

Beyond basic checks, the feature also allows users to track their monthly consumption patterns. This historical data can help families plan their grocery needs more effectively and identify any discrepancies in past distributions. The integration with Aadhaar further streamlines verification, reducing the risk of duplicate or fake ration cards. As the government continues to refine the platform, future updates may include notifications for upcoming distribution dates or alerts about changes in quota allocations.
