Google Brings Gemini AI to Chrome Sidebar in India, Canada, and New Zealand

Google has rolled out a significant update for Chrome users, integrating its advanced AI chatbot, Gemini, directly into the browser’s sidebar. This feature is now available for users in India, Canada, and New Zealand. With this new addition, a dedicated sidebar appears on the desktop version of Chrome, allowing users to interact with Gemini without leaving the page. This means anyone browsing the web can instantly ask questions, summarize content, or extract key information from whatever is on their screen.

Multilingual Support for Indian Users

One of the most notable aspects of this update is its language accessibility. Indian users can now communicate with Gemini in eight regional languages. Beyond English, the AI supports Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil. This broad language support makes the tool far more useful for a diverse audience, allowing people to get work done in their preferred tongue.

How Gemini Works Inside Chrome

Once the update is active, users will notice a new “Ask Gemini” icon located in the Chrome tab bar. Clicking this icon opens a sidebar panel on the right side of the browser. From here, you can perform a variety of tasks. For instance, you can ask Gemini to summarize an entire webpage or a lengthy article you are reading. If you are studying a complex topic, the AI can even generate a quiz to help you test your understanding.

Assistance with Shopping and Travel Planning

Gemini’s ability to process information from multiple open tabs at once is a standout feature. Imagine you are shopping for a new smartphone or comparing flight tickets across several websites. Instead of manually switching between tabs, Gemini can read all open pages simultaneously. It then compiles a clear, easy-to-read comparison of prices, features, and other relevant details, saving you significant time and effort.

Deep Integration with Google Services

The capabilities of Gemini extend far beyond just web pages. It connects seamlessly with other Google applications such as Gmail, Maps, Calendar, YouTube, Keep, and Drive. While working in the Chrome sidebar, you can draft and send emails directly without opening a new tab. If you are watching a long video on YouTube, you can ask Gemini for a concise summary complete with timestamps to quickly find the parts that matter. Furthermore, the AI acts as a personal assistant by helping you schedule meetings or providing a rundown of your daily agenda.

Smart Photo Editing with Nano Banana 2

Another powerful tool available through the Gemini sidebar is the “Nano Banana 2” AI feature, which transforms photo editing. To understand its practical use, consider a common scenario: you are shopping for a new sofa or piece of furniture online. You can upload a photo of your room directly into the sidebar and ask Gemini to show how that sofa would look in the space. The advanced AI then modifies your room’s image, placing the furniture within the scene. This gives you a realistic preview, helping you make confident purchasing decisions.

Availability on iPhone

This update is not limited to desktop users. Google is also extending Gemini support to the iOS version of Chrome in India. iPhone users will find a “Page Tools” icon in the address bar. Tapping this icon provides access to the same smart features, allowing mobile users to summarize pages and ask questions on the go.

Features Still Missing in India

While this rollout brings many improvements, some advanced features are not yet available in these regions. In January, Google launched an “agentic AI” feature in the United States. This technology allows the AI to take control of the browser and complete tasks on behalf of the user. However, the company has not released this particular feature for users in India, New Zealand, and Canada at this time.

Overall, the arrival of Gemini in Chrome marks a major step forward in making the browsing experience smarter and more interactive. For Indian users especially, the ability to use the tool in local languages removes a significant barrier, opening up powerful AI assistance to a much wider audience.
