WhatsApp Introduces Parent-Managed Accounts for Children Under 13

Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new feature designed specifically to enhance online safety for younger users. The company is developing a system known as the “Parent-Managed Account,” which aims to give parents greater oversight over their children’s messaging activities.

According to reports, this feature is being tailored for children under the age of 13. Under this setup, a child’s WhatsApp account will be directly linked to a parent’s account, allowing guardians to monitor and manage their child’s interactions within the app.

Parents Decide Who Can Contact Their Child

Once this feature becomes available, parents will gain several control options. They will be able to determine who can send messages to their child, which contacts can be added to the child’s list, and what groups the child can join. The core objective is to ensure that children can use the messaging service in a secure environment, minimizing the risk of contact with strangers.

  • Parents can approve or block specific contacts.
  • They can control group invitations and memberships.
  • Unknown or suspicious messages will be filtered into a separate folder for parental review.

Restricted Features for Child Accounts

The new system will also impose limitations on what children can access within the app. Reports indicate that young users will not be permitted to use certain advanced features. These restricted elements include the status update function, channels, and features related to Meta AI. This approach is intended to reduce exposure to potentially inappropriate content or interactions.

Enhanced Safety for Suspicious Messages

Additional security measures are expected to be part of this update. If a message arrives from an unknown or suspicious source, it will automatically be routed to a separate folder. Parents will have the ability to view these messages and, if necessary, block the sender directly. This provides an extra layer of protection against unwanted contact.

Why This Feature Matters

With children increasingly using smartphones and the internet at a younger age, online safety has become a growing concern for families. WhatsApp’s move is an effort to reassure parents that their children are using the app responsibly and securely. By giving adults direct control over the account, the platform aims to strike a balance between allowing kids to stay connected and protecting them from potential risks.

Reports suggest that the company will roll out this feature gradually. It may become available in different countries over the coming months, allowing for a measured and carefully managed introduction.
