Voice-Enabled Food Ordering: The End of App Navigation

India’s online food and grocery delivery landscape is on the verge of a major transformation. The days of endlessly scrolling through menus, checking ratings, and typing out orders are numbered. A new voice-driven system promises to simplify the entire experience, allowing users to order their favorite meals simply by speaking.

Typically, placing a food order involves opening an app, browsing through restaurant options, studying ingredient lists, and reading reviews—a process that can easily consume 15 to 20 minutes. Soon, this will become a thing of the past, as voice commands will handle the heavy lifting.

Ordering Food with Your Voice

Leading online food delivery platform Swiggy has partnered with Sarvam AI to launch a voice-led commerce service. This feature enables users to search for dishes and place orders entirely through speech. For instance, saying something like “Pack one paneer butter masala and two naans” will prompt the AI to understand the request and automatically place the order. This functionality will be integrated across Swiggy’s core delivery service, its grocery arm Instamart, and its restaurant table-booking platform Dineout.

Voice-Based Payments Made Simple

The convenience doesn’t stop at selecting food. The entire payment process is also being streamlined. By incorporating Razorpay’s payment gateway—which has its own partnership with Sarvam AI—users can complete end-to-end transactions using only their voice. From placing an order to making the payment, there is no need to tap a single button.

Support for Over 10 Indian Languages

One of the standout features of this technology is its accessibility. The AI model developed by Sarvam is not limited to English speakers. It understands more than ten regional Indian languages, including Hindi. This opens up online ordering to millions of people in smaller towns who may have been hesitant to use apps or type in English. Conversation itself is becoming the new user interface.

How the App-Free System Works

During a recent AI Impact Summit, Swiggy demonstrated that users can order goods without needing an internet connection or an app. The entire operation is powered by Sarvam’s AI assistant, named Indus. This assistant is integrated into Sarvam’s chat platform, allowing users to place orders while engaging in a natural conversation. The AI manages everything from search to payment, handling the complete workflow independently.

  • Voice commands replace manual scrolling and typing.
  • Orders can be placed for food delivery, groceries, and table bookings.
  • Payments are completed through voice interaction, with no buttons required.
  • The system supports Hindi and over ten other Indian languages.
  • The AI assistant Indus handles the entire ordering process autonomously.
