WhatsApp Introduces Member Tags: Define Your Role in Any Group
In large group chats, it’s often difficult to tell who performs which role. Whether it’s a sports club, a workplace team, or a volunteer organization, knowing each person’s function can streamline communication. To address this, WhatsApp has rolled out a new Member Tag feature that allows users to clearly indicate their identity or role within any group.
This update makes conversations more organized and transparent. Instead of guessing who the coordinator, coach, or manager is, group members can now see a label directly attached to each participant’s name. The tag is visible to everyone in the group, including new members who join later.
Where Does the Member Tag Appear?
Once you set a tag, it will appear just below your name inside the message bubble. It also shows up in the group member list, making it easy for anyone to quickly understand each person’s role. A key advantage is that you can set a different tag for each group you belong to, giving you full control over how you present yourself in different communities.
How to Add Your Member Tag
Adding a tag is a straightforward process. Follow these steps to highlight your role in any group chat:
- Open the group chat and tap the group name at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down to the Members list.
- Look for the option labeled “Add member tag” and tap it.
- Type in your desired tag—such as “Captain,” “Volunteer,” or “Manager.”
- Tap the Save button to confirm.
Editing or Removing Your Tag
If you need to change or completely remove your tag, the process is just as simple:
- To edit: Go to the group member list, tap on your name, select “Edit member tag,” type a new label, and save.
- To delete: Access the same edit screen. Android users will see a delete icon; iOS users can remove the text and save the empty field.
Important Points to Keep in Mind
- Tags can be a maximum of 30 characters long.
- Special characters (such as @, #, $), checkmarks, and website links are not allowed in tags.
- Each group requires its own tag—your settings do not carry over automatically.
This feature is designed to bring clarity to group interactions, especially in communities with many participants. By letting users define their own roles, WhatsApp makes it easier for everyone to navigate conversations and know who to reach out to for specific matters.
