X Launches Dedicated Messaging App for iPhone and iPad Users
Social media platform X is expanding beyond its built-in direct messaging feature with the launch of a standalone communication app. The new application, called XChat, is scheduled to go live on April 25, initially available for iPhone and iPad users through the App Store. This move marks a significant shift in how the platform handles private conversations, offering a more focused and secure environment for users.
A Purpose-Built Private Chat Experience
XChat is designed to provide what the company describes as a private and distraction-free space for conversations. The app is already available for pre-order on the App Store, signaling a strong push toward delivering a premium messaging experience. Unlike the main X platform, this dedicated app strips away advertisements and tracking mechanisms, allowing users to communicate without interruptions or data collection concerns.
Core Privacy and Security Features
Privacy stands at the heart of XChat’s design. The app incorporates end-to-end encryption, ensuring that messages can only be read by the sender and the intended recipient. This level of security means that even X itself cannot access the content of conversations. Additionally, the app will not feature any advertisements or user tracking, reinforcing its commitment to protecting user data.
- End-to-end encryption for all messages
- No advertisements within the chat interface
- No tracking of user activity or conversations
Advanced Messaging Controls
Users will have greater control over their conversations with several modern messaging features. Sent messages can be edited or deleted after they have been delivered, and deletion removes the message for all participants in the chat. A screenshot blocking feature is also included, preventing others from capturing images of private conversations. For added security, disappearing messages can be set to automatically vanish after five minutes, making the app suitable for sharing sensitive information.
- Edit and delete messages after sending
- Screenshot blocking to protect chat privacy
- Disappearing messages with a five-minute timer
Group Chats and Calling Capabilities
XChat supports large group conversations right from launch, allowing up to 481 members in a single chat. The company has plans to increase this limit to 500 and eventually 1,000 members in future updates. Joinable links make it easy to add new participants to groups. Beyond text messaging, the app includes cross-device voice and video calling features, enabling users to communicate in multiple ways without leaving the platform.
- Group chats supporting up to 481 members initially
- Voice and video calls across devices
- Joinable links for easy group access
Transitioning Away from X Communities
As part of this strategic shift, X will discontinue its Communities feature starting May 6 due to declining usage. Users are being encouraged to migrate their group conversations to XChat by sharing group links. The company has set a deadline of May 30 for users to complete this transition, after which the older feature will no longer be supported.
This move reflects a broader effort by X to streamline its offerings and provide a more secure, ad-free messaging experience. By separating messaging into its own dedicated application, the platform aims to create a focused environment where privacy and functionality take precedence over other distractions. The launch on April 25 will mark the beginning of this new chapter for X users who value secure and controlled communication.
