The Coming Satellite Revolution in Your Pocket
Mobile network dead zones are on the verge of becoming a relic of the past. In the coming years, smartphones will connect directly to satellites, bypassing traditional cell towers. According to a recent report from the research firm Counterpoint Research, this technology is accelerating toward mainstream adoption. By 2030, an estimated 46 percent of all smartphones sold globally will be equipped with direct-to-satellite (NTN-capable) connectivity—nearly half of the market.
However, the rollout will not happen overnight. Initially, most satellite features will operate on proprietary networks developed by individual manufacturers, as a universal global standard (such as the 3GPP NTN specification) is still being refined and standardized.
Who Started the Race?
The satellite connectivity trend was ignited by Apple in 2022, when the iPhone 14 introduced a satellite-based SOS feature. That breakthrough caught the industry off guard. Apple partnered with the satellite company Globalstar to make it work. In a surprising twist, e-commerce giant Amazon recently acquired Globalstar, opening a massive new opportunity for Amazon to offer connectivity-as-a-service on a global scale.
Following Apple’s lead, Chinese manufacturer Huawei added satellite capabilities to its phones in 2023. Today, more than ten major smartphone brands—including Samsung, Google, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo—have begun integrating satellite connectivity into select models.
Who Is Leading the Pack?
Counterpoint’s principal analyst, Soumen Mandal, notes that Apple remains the dominant player in satellite-enabled smartphone sales. In the Android ecosystem, Samsung is the clear frontrunner. The strategies differ sharply: Apple, Huawei, and Google are investing in private satellite networks that they control exclusively. Meanwhile, Samsung and several Chinese brands are aligning with the emerging 3GPP NTN standard, aiming for a more open and scalable solution that could eventually work across devices and carriers worldwide.
Why Is Satellite Calling Limited to Expensive Phones?
For now, satellite calling and messaging are largely confined to premium, high-cost smartphones. The primary reason is that the technology is still in its infancy, mainly used for emergency SOS texts rather than everyday communication. Experts argue that until a compelling “killer use case” emerges—such as standard voice calls or internet access—the average consumer will not see enough value to demand it. The next major update, 3GPP Release 18, is expected to broaden adoption within flagship devices. However, satellite features are unlikely to reach mid-range, budget-friendly phones until 3GPP Release 19 arrives, which could be several years away.
The United States Takes the Lead
Currently, the United States is the most advanced market for satellite smartphone connectivity. Major telecom carriers have struck ambitious deals: T-Mobile partnered with SpaceX, while AT&T teamed up with AST SpaceMobile. These collaborations aim to bring satellite coverage to everyday phones without requiring specialized hardware. Yet in other major regions—such as Europe and China—telecom operators have shown less urgency, waiting for clearer business models and technological maturity before making large investments.
Key Challenges Ahead

What the Future Holds
Despite these hurdles, the trajectory is clear. Satellite connectivity is no longer a sci-fi fantasy—it is a rapidly maturing technology with real-world deployments. As competition intensifies among smartphone makers, carriers, and satellite operators, costs will likely drop, and features will expand. By the end of this decade, the ability to send a message or make a call from a remote mountain, a desert, or even the middle of the ocean could become as ordinary as unlocking your phone today.
The race is on, and the winners will be those who can balance innovation with affordability, while building the infrastructure to connect the unconnected corners of the world.
