A Fresh New Look for Google Gemini on iOS

Google is rolling out a striking redesign for its AI app, Gemini, and early glimpses reveal a dramatically different experience. The updated interface introduces vibrant color gradients, smarter tools, and a reimagined navigation system that feels both premium and user-friendly. Currently, this update is available to a limited group of iOS users, with plans to expand to Android and other platforms in the coming weeks.

Homepage Gets a Bold Makeover

The most noticeable changes appear the moment you open the app. The homepage now greets users with a personalized message: “Hi [Your Name], what’s on your mind?” This sits directly beneath the iconic Gemini spark logo, set against a lively, pulsing gradient background. The dynamic visuals shift subtly as you type, creating an engaging and modern atmosphere.

Below the greeting, a redesigned pill-shaped prompt box takes center stage. To its right, you’ll find options for voice input and Gemini Live. A new plus (+) button has also been added to this box. Tapping it opens a streamlined upload menu, giving you direct access to photos, your camera, files, and notebooks. This consolidation makes the app feel smoother and more intuitive than before.

Gradient Backgrounds and Visual Flourishes

The entire homepage is now wrapped in a colorful gradient that pulses gently. This effect is especially pronounced during text input, adding a layer of polish that makes the app feel alive. The design language leans heavily into a clean, contemporary aesthetic, moving away from the more static look of previous versions.

New Tools and Smarter Options

Inside the app, Google has reorganized essential features into a single, well-structured menu. Tools like image generation, video creation, music composition, Canvas, and Deep Research are now presented with full descriptions, making them easier to discover and use. This unified approach reduces clutter and helps users find exactly what they need without digging through multiple menus.

Model Selection and Icon Updates

The model picker has been relocated to the top-left corner as a dropdown menu. This change lets you switch between AI models quickly, depending on the task at hand. Additionally, the app’s icons have been refreshed. They now feature thinner, more rounded lines, contributing to a more modern and cohesive visual identity across the interface.

Google is currently testing this new layout on Android and web platforms, while macOS users have already received the update. This suggests a phased rollout strategy, with iOS leading the charge for now.

Navigation and Settings Overhaul

Several behind-the-scenes changes will alter how you move through the app. One of the most significant is the relocation of the account switcher. It now sits at the very bottom of the navigation menu—a departure from Google’s typical placement in other apps. This small but notable shift aims to streamline the primary user flow.

Redesigned Thinking Process

The “thinking process” feature, which shows how the AI constructs its responses, has been moved. Instead of appearing on the main screen, it now lives in the overflow menu. When activated, it slides up from the bottom as a separate sheet. This keeps the main chat interface cleaner and more focused, while still providing transparency into the AI’s reasoning when you want it.

What iOS Users Can Expect

On iPhones, the redesign makes extensive use of a “liquid glass” effect. This gives the interface a glossy, high-end feel that aligns well with Apple’s design philosophy. The translucent elements and smooth animations add a layer of sophistication that sets the iOS version apart. It remains to be seen how this aesthetic will translate to Android devices, but early signs point to a similarly polished experience.

Limited Rollout and Availability

For now, this update is classified as a limited rollout. Only a select group of iOS users are seeing the new design. Google has not specified an exact timeline for a wider release, but the expectation is that all users will gain access within the next few weeks. Those with a premium membership may receive priority access, though the company has not confirmed this.

Key Changes at a Glance

  • Personalized greeting with user name on the homepage
  • Pulsing gradient backgrounds that react to typing
  • Pill-shaped prompt box with integrated voice and upload options
  • Unified tools menu for images, video, music, Canvas, and research
  • Relocated model picker as a top-left dropdown
  • Updated icons with thinner, rounded designs
  • Account switcher moved to the bottom of the navigation
  • Thinking process feature moved to overflow menu
  • Liquid glass effect exclusive to iOS for a premium look

This redesign signals Google’s commitment to making Gemini not just more powerful, but also more delightful to use. The combination of visual flair, smarter organization, and thoughtful navigation tweaks suggests a product that is maturing rapidly. As the rollout expands, users across platforms can look forward to a significantly upgraded experience.
