A Strategic Pivot: From Hiring Freeze to AI Investment

In 2025, Salesforce made a bold decision that raised eyebrows across the tech industry: it completely halted new hires for software engineers. The driving force behind this move was a significant productivity boost from AI tools. Now, CEO Marc Benioff has unveiled an even more ambitious plan for the coming year.

The company is projecting a massive expenditure of approximately $300 million on Anthropic AI tokens in 2026. The bulk of this budget will be directed straight into coding activities, signaling a fundamental shift in how the organization approaches software development. Rather than expanding its workforce with new recruits, Salesforce is channeling its resources into AI systems designed to supercharge its existing engineering talent.

The Reasoning Behind the Hiring Freeze

Marc Benioff first decided to pause the recruitment of software engineers back in 2024. The rationale was clear: the adoption of Agentforce and other AI-powered tools had accelerated the engineering team’s output by more than 30%. This leap in efficiency made it possible to maintain—and even increase—productivity without adding new headcount.

However, the freeze was not company-wide. While engineering hiring stalled, Salesforce continued to expand in other critical areas. The company laid out plans to bring on between 1,000 and 2,000 new sales employees, specifically to push its AI products to larger enterprise clients.

Are Engineers Becoming Obsolete?

Not at all. Benioff has been clear that AI technology has not advanced to the point where it can fully replace human developers. Salesforce still employs roughly 15,000 engineers. The difference is how they work now.

These engineers collaborate closely with AI tools such as Anthropic models, OpenAI Codex, and Cursor. Speaking on the popular “All-In” podcast, Benioff explained that the role of the engineer has evolved. Instead of writing every line of code themselves, they now oversee the work of AI agents. No matter how fast a machine operates, it still requires human oversight and critical thinking.

Heavy Investment in AI and Rising Profits

Salesforce’s vision for artificial intelligence is both clear and aggressive. The company has invested over $300 million in Anthropic, including an equity stake. Its flagship AI product, Agentforce, is already generating impressive returns, with annual recurring revenue reaching $800 million.

Further demonstrating its commitment, Salesforce has integrated Anthropic’s Claude AI into Slack, its widely used messaging platform. This move brings advanced AI capabilities directly into the daily workflow of millions of users.

A Smart Approach to Cost Control

As AI usage scales, so do the associated costs. To keep these expenses in check, Salesforce is developing a sophisticated system that evaluates task complexity. This system determines whether a large, powerful AI model is necessary for a given job or if a smaller, more efficient model will suffice. The goal is to avoid wasting tokens on tasks that don’t require heavy computational resources.

Benioff has termed this entire shift a “digital labor transformation.” According to his estimates, between 30% and 50% of Salesforce’s current workload is now entirely managed by artificial intelligence. This transformation is not just about cutting costs—it represents a reimagining of how a major technology company operates in the age of AI.
