Messaging is about to get a whole lot more intuitive. WhatsApp is developing a feature that lets you check who’s online or was recently active—without ever opening a single chat window. This new Contacts Hub is designed to streamline how you interact with your contact list, offering a live snapshot of activity at a glance. Alongside this, the platform is also testing a powerful storage management tool aimed at clearing out status media that clogs up your phone’s memory. A Centralized Contacts Hub for Real-Time Activity
WhatsApp is continuously refining its user experience, and the upcoming Contacts Hub marks a significant shift. Instead of tapping into individual chats to see if someone is available, you’ll soon have a dedicated section that surfaces this information instantly. The feature is currently being tested in the latest beta version for iPhone, following an earlier beta release for Android users in March.
This new hub will appear within the app’s settings, positioned just below your own profile photo. It will display a chronological list of contacts who have been active recently. Those currently online will appear at the very top, marked by a prominent green dot on their profile picture. Beneath them, you’ll find contacts who were active within a recent timeframe, arranged in order of their last seen time.
How the Contacts Hub Changes Your Workflow
The Contacts Hub isn’t just about visibility—it also introduces smarter organization and control. Your four favorite contacts will be pinned at the top of the list for quick access. You can easily manage and update this favorites list directly from the hub, making it simple to keep your most important people front and center.
- Sorting and Searching: You’ll have the flexibility to sort your entire contact list alphabetically by name, rather than by online status. A dedicated search bar will also let you find any contact instantly, no matter how large your list grows.
- Adding New Contacts: The hub will streamline the process of adding new people. You can manually type a phone number or scan a QR code to add a contact directly, without navigating away from the interface.
It’s important to note that privacy remains a core principle. You will only be able to see another person’s online status if you have your own online status set to visible. This mutual visibility rule keeps the feature balanced and respectful of user preferences.
Free Up Storage Without Losing Important Chats
In addition to the Contacts Hub, WhatsApp is tackling one of the most common frustrations for users: a phone clogged with downloaded status updates. The new Status Media Cleaner, spotted in the Android beta version, is designed to help you reclaim storage space without deleting valuable media from your main chats.
After the update, the Manage Storage section will include a dedicated filter for Status Updates. This filter will show you exactly which status media files are taking up the most space on your device. With a single tap, you can remove these bulky files directly from within the app, leaving your important chat media untouched.
