Managing Digital Payments Across Two Smartphones

Many people now carry two smartphones—one for work and another for personal calls, social media, or entertainment. While this setup offers convenience, it often creates a challenge when it comes to making digital payments. Most UPI apps are tied to the SIM card linked to your bank account, meaning they work only on the primary phone. Forgetting that main device at home or in the car can make paying for anything nearly impossible. Fortunately, a feature called UPI Circle offers a practical solution.

This feature, available in several popular UPI apps (sometimes labeled as Pocket Money in apps like PhonePe), was originally designed for family members—such as children or elderly relatives—to make payments from a shared account. However, it works equally well for individuals who regularly use two phones. Instead of requiring you to carry your primary device everywhere, UPI Circle lets you authorize a secondary phone to access your main bank account for payments.

How UPI Circle Actually Works

Understanding the mechanism is straightforward. UPI Circle does not copy or register your main UPI account onto the second phone. Rather, the primary account holder grants permission to another mobile number to make payments from the same bank account. This keeps your primary account secure on your main device while still enabling transactions from a secondary phone. You can choose between two modes of control:

  • Approval Mode: Every time a payment is attempted from the secondary phone, a notification is sent to your primary device. The transaction is completed only after you give explicit approval.
  • Limit Mode: You set a predefined spending limit for the secondary phone. Within that limit, payments can be made directly without requiring your approval each time.

Setting Up UPI Circle Step by Step

Activating this feature is simple and can be done in a few minutes by following these steps on your primary phone:

Open Your UPI App

Launch the UPI app that is linked to your bank account on your main smartphone.

Locate the Feature

Navigate to the settings or account section and look for the option labeled UPI Circle or Pocket Money. The exact name may vary depending on the app you use.

Add a Secondary Number

Tap on the option to invite a dependent or add a member. Enter the mobile number of the second phone you wish to authorize.

Complete Verification

Depending on your app, you may need to scan the UPI ID or QR code associated with the secondary account. Some apps also require Aadhaar verification as an added security measure.

Set Payment Permissions

Choose whether you want to use Approval Mode or Limit Mode. If you select Limit Mode, specify the maximum amount the secondary phone can spend without your consent.

Finalize the Setup

Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to confirm the setup. Once completed, the secondary phone will be successfully added to your UPI Circle and ready for use.

Important Details to Keep in Mind

Before relying on this feature, there are a few key points to consider:

  • Official and Secure: UPI Circle is an official feature built into legitimate UPI apps. There is no need for any third-party workarounds or unofficial methods. All transactions remain encrypted and protected by standard UPI security protocols.
  • Spending Limits Apply: The feature comes with built-in restrictions to prevent misuse. Depending on the app and your chosen settings, the secondary phone is typically limited to a maximum of 15,000 rupees per month. This cap helps safeguard your primary account while still offering flexibility.
  • No Need to Share Bank Details: The secondary phone never directly accesses your bank account information. It only uses the permissions you grant, ensuring your sensitive data remains private.

By using UPI Circle, you can enjoy the convenience of digital payments from either smartphone without compromising security or needing to carry your primary device everywhere. This feature effectively bridges the gap between managing multiple phones and maintaining seamless access to your finances.
