WhatsApp Introduces New Scam Alert Feature to Combat Rising Fraud

With online scams and cyber fraud becoming increasingly sophisticated, WhatsApp is strengthening its security measures to protect users. The platform is developing a built-in security feature designed to identify suspicious messages from unknown numbers and deliver instant warnings directly within the chat interface. This proactive approach aims to help users recognize and avoid fraudulent schemes before they fall victim.

How the Scam Alert System Works

The upcoming Scam Alert feature will automatically scrutinize messages received from numbers not saved in the user’s contact list. When the system detects patterns commonly associated with scams—such as fake job offers, lottery winnings, or urgent requests to click on links—it will display a warning banner inside the chat window. This alert gives users a clear heads-up about the potential threat, allowing them to avoid engaging with suspicious content.

Only Unfamiliar Numbers Are Scanned

It is important to note that this feature only applies to messages from unknown senders. Conversations with contacts already saved in the user’s phonebook will not be affected or flagged. This ensures that the security check focuses solely on potential risks from outside the user’s trusted network.

User Control Remains a Priority

When the system identifies a chat as potentially dangerous, users will be presented with two clear options:

  • Block and Report: This allows users to immediately block the suspicious number and report it to WhatsApp for further action.
  • Trust the Chat: If the user believes the conversation is legitimate, they can choose to continue the interaction without any restrictions.

This approach ensures that users retain full control over their messaging experience, rather than having decisions made for them.

Privacy and Security Go Hand in Hand

WhatsApp has designed the Scam Alert feature with user privacy as a core consideration. The entire scam detection process takes place directly on the user’s device, meaning no message content is ever sent to WhatsApp or Meta servers for analysis. All chats remain protected by end-to-end encryption, so even WhatsApp itself cannot read the messages. Additionally, no other user will be able to tell whether this feature is enabled on your device.

On-Device Technology Keeps Data Local

The scanning and analysis happen entirely within the phone’s local environment. This approach prevents any external access to private conversations while still providing effective scam detection.

Encryption Remains Fully Intact

All communications continue to benefit from end-to-end encryption, meaning messages are only readable by the sender and the intended recipient. The new feature does not compromise this fundamental security layer in any way.

Track How Often Scam Alerts Appear

WhatsApp is also developing a local reporting tool that will allow users to review how many times the Scam Alert feature has issued warnings over a given period. This transparency helps users understand the frequency of scam attempts they encounter and adjust their security habits accordingly.

Feature Will Be Optional by Default

One key aspect of this update is that the Scam Alert feature will not be turned on automatically. Users who wish to use it must manually activate it through the app’s settings. This gives everyone the freedom to decide whether they want this extra layer of protection.

Still in Development Phase

At present, the Scam Alert feature is still under development and has not yet been released to beta testers. However, testing is expected to begin in future updates, after which a stable version may be rolled out to all users. This timeline suggests that WhatsApp is taking a careful, measured approach to ensure the feature works reliably before widespread release.
