WhatsApp Set to Introduce View Once for Text Messages

Messaging giant WhatsApp is pushing forward with fresh privacy features, this time extending its popular View Once functionality to text messages. After rolling out the feature for photos, videos, and voice notes, the company is now testing a version that lets users send text that disappears immediately after being read.

Text Messages Will Soon Self-Destruct

According to industry trackers, WhatsApp is currently testing the View Once text feature in its latest Android beta update. While the option has been available for media files, the expansion to plain text marks a significant step in giving users greater control over their conversations. The goal is to reduce permanent chat records and offer an extra layer of security for sensitive discussions.

How the New Feature Works

Early reports suggest the feature appears in Android beta version 2.26.22.7. Here is how it is expected to function:

  • After typing a message, the sender long-presses the send button.
  • A menu appears with the option “Send as View Once.”
  • Once selected, the recipient can read the message only a single time.
  • As soon as the message is opened and the user navigates away, it vanishes from the chat entirely.

This differs from WhatsApp’s existing disappearing messages feature, which offers time limits ranging from 24 hours to 90 days. The View Once option is more immediate—messages disappear the moment they are viewed.

Release Timeline Still Unconfirmed

WhatsApp has not yet issued an official statement or timeline for the rollout. The feature remains in active development. If testing proceeds smoothly, it is expected to first reach beta users before being made available to the wider WhatsApp audience.

Spoiler Message Feature Also in Development

Beyond the View Once text option, WhatsApp is reportedly working on a spoiler message feature. This tool is designed to work almost like magic—messages appear blurred in the chat, and recipients must tap on them to reveal the content. This could prove especially useful for sharing passwords, banking details, verification codes, and other private information that users want to keep hidden until a specific moment.

Similar Features Already Exist on Other Platforms

The concept of disappearing content is not entirely new. Apps like Snapchat have long offered messages and photos that vanish after viewing. Instagram also provides a vanish mode, where chats automatically delete once the conversation window is closed. WhatsApp’s move brings similar functionality to one of the world’s most widely used messaging platforms, giving users another tool to protect their privacy.
